Fitness Videos Thrive | Body Health & Fitness

?I?m definitely buying something tonight,? said Lisa Nord, an elementary-school social worker in Manhattan. Ron Barranco of Staten Island gestured at a table covered in DVDs. ?Would you like them all?? he asked his wife, Joanne Barranco. ?Get them.?

The heyday of Jack LaLanne and Jane Fonda may have gone the way of leg warmers and Betamax, but fitness videos have not only endured, they are back in vogue. During the recession, the fitness DVD industry has thrived as consumers opted for $15 videos instead of gym memberships, according to the research firm IbisWorld, which says that fitness DVD production revenue jumped 12.6 percent in 2012, to $264.5 million.

Joni Olseen, 58, who works in marketing in Minneapolis, has amassed a collection of about 100 fitness DVDs. ?You?re working out on your own terms,? Ms. Olseen said. ?I?m in as good shape now as when I used to go to the gym.?

And the programs have never before been so intense. (Try doing P90X after eating Cheerios.) Hilary Raupp, 40, had grown bored of her gym. But ?I wasn?t looking for a Jane Fonda riff,? said Ms. Raupp, a homemaker who lives in Doylestown, Pa. ?I was looking for a real program.? So she bought ?Insanity,? an extreme interval-training DVD series that she said cost $180.

?I love it,? Ms. Raupp said, and since her old gym cost $100 a month for both her and husband, plus $8 to $25 more when they took a class, ?we saved money by month three.?

You might think that working out at home without a trainer would lead to more injuries, but Dr. Thomas M. Best, a director of the division of sports medicine at Ohio State, said no evidence supports that, though he stressed that if you have a condition like heart disease or diabetes, you should check with a doctor before beginning an at-home program.

Offering further credence to the genre, professional instructors and gyms, rather than models and actresses, are increasingly headlining videos. This month, Canyon Ranch began selling its first fitness DVD, ?Canyon Ranch: Strong Sculpted? ($16.99), set amid cactuses in the Tucson desert. ?We really just wanted to be able to offer an opportunity for individuals to have the experience of Canyon Ranch that don?t have the financial ability to come,? said Heather Schmidt, a fitness instructor at the ranch, who is also in the new video.

This summer, Tracy Anderson, who has helped sculpture the bodies of Madonna, Nicole Richie and Jennifer Lopez, will introduce a series for pregnant women. (She?s had T-shirts made up that read: ?Staying in is the new going out in fitness.?)

It will share shelf space with ?Exhale: Core Fusion 30 Day Sculpt? from Exhale Spa; ?Rhythmica: Dance Cardio Party? from Marc Santa Maria, the regional director of group fitness for Crunch New York; a popular series of Bollywood-theme video workouts from Hemalayaa, an instructor whose emphasis is on having fun; and ?Bethenny?s Skinnygirl Workout? from Bethenny Frankel, the reality-TV star, and the yoga instructor Mike McArdle. And Ms. Fonda, the veteran, last year came out with fitness DVDs for baby boomers.

Industry executives are also beginning to offer live-streaming and on-demand subscription services. Bill Sondheim, president of Gaiam, one of the largest domestic producers and distributors of fitness DVDs, which is based in Louisville, Colo., last year introduced GaiamTV, costing $9.95 a month for unlimited access to more than 500 fitness videos.

Of all the genres available, yoga is the most popular, according to IbisWorld. That?s not surprising given the variety of styles, Mr. McArdle said.

Mr. McArdle met Ms. Frankel several years ago when she was taking his yoga class on the Upper East Side, long before she was a cast member of ?The Real Housewives of New York,? and he has since trained her privately. He says that at-home practice has its advantages: ?It brings you in touch with the solemnity and the quiet in your own space.?

Including trainers could improve customers? perception of celebrity workout videos. ?People don?t think they?re a serious program,? said Jill Ross, an owner of Collage Video, based in Minneapolis, which sells more than 2,000 titles, up from about 150 when it was founded in 1987.

Mr. Sondheim of Gaiam agreed. Instructors like Rodney Yee and Mari Winsor are more popular with customers, he said, than Kim Kardashian, with whom Gaiam made a workout DVD.

Perhaps because celebrities covet privacy, though, some of them use fitness DVDs. Ms. Anderson said that Gwyneth Paltrow, her student and business partner, and Ms. Lopez both used DVDs when beginning her program. ?Gwyneth was like the worst dancer in the entire world,? Ms. Anderson said, ?and now she?s great.?

Even devoted gymgoers use DVDs to supplement workouts. ?I do it on days that I can?t motivate myself to get out and go,? said Lauren Ramakrishna, 27, a Web editor who relies on ?Biggest Loser,? Jillian Michaels, Bob Harper and ?Insanity? DVDs when she can?t make it from her Jersey City apartment to a nearby New York Sports Club. ?It?s really about keeping things interesting and different.?

Brammo Empulse and Empulse R finally unveiled: 100-mph speeds and raised prices

Brammo Empulse and Empulse R finally unveiled: 100-mph speeds and raised prices

Brammo has suffered some major setbacks in getting its latest Empulse electric motorcycle to market, but the company has stuck to its revised launch date: it unveiled the 2013 model last night. The key specs haven't changed during the delay -- we're still looking at a six-speed gearbox, a max speed of 100 mph and a fast-recharge time of 3.5 hours -- but the price has jumped from $14,000 to $16,995. There's also the Empluse R, a more premium model that will go on sale for $18,995 in June. The main difference between the base model and the R is the material: the Empulse has a plastic body, while the R uses carbon fiber. Check out the full presser below the break -- and if you're holding out for the 2013 Empulse, the gallery pics of the R will have to tide you over till the base model launches early next year.

Breastfeeding Group on Time Cover: Way to Be!

The Time Magazine breastfeeding cover and story on attachment parenting are A-O-K with at least one major organization, despite the ruckus it caused.

Bettina Forbes, co-founder of Best for Babes - an advocacy group dedicated to educating moms about breastfeeding - defended the controversial image.

Forbes says three is NOT too old to be breastfeeding, and that while she'd have preferred a celebrity like Jennifer Garner on the cover, it's still great.

Attachment Parenting Time Cover

"We understand that Americans are uncomfortable with [the Time cover]," she told TMZ.

"However, in other cultures where babies wean themselves normally, usually somewhere around age three or four, it is perfectly acceptable."

"Think of it this way - some cultures have been drinking green tea for millennia, yet only recently has it become popular in the United States once the health benefits were more understood and it was popularized by marketing."

"Breastfeeding is the same thing," she argues, since "it is accepted and valued in many cultures, but not yet fully in the U.S."

"We're happy with anything that is an appealing image, provokes conversation, and ultimately desensitizes people to breastfeeding."

USPS goes postal on lithium ion batteries, refuses to ship smartphones overseas

Image

The USPS has announced that it'll refuse to ship any gear containing lithium ion batteries overseas. The postal service believes combusting power packs have caused two fatal cargo plane crashes since 2006 -- hence the ban, which takes effect from May 16th. Anyone wishing to ship the latest tech to those living or serving overseas will have to use another shipping company -- although the ban might be relaxed in 2013, once safety testing has been carried out.

Isis bolsters its mobile wallet with American Express cards

The carrier-backed Isis mobile payment service added a batch of new financial partners earlier this year, and it's now back with another fairly big addition. The venture announced today that it has brought American Express' various credit card offerings into the fold (including the company's own mobile-linked Serve cards), which will let users of those cards load them into the Isis app and make payments with their NFC-equipped smartphone -- when the service begins its rollout this summer, that is. As you may recall, American Express itself had already signed on as an Isis partner last year, but this is the first time that the company has committed to tying its cards to the platform -- which is a rather important little detail.

Beastie Boys' Ad-Rock Pays Tribute To Adam Yauch

'Saturday Night Live,' Dalai Lama, Thom Yorke and fun. also honor Beasties rapper MCA.
By Gil Kaufman

Two days after losing his life-long friend and band mate of 30 years, Adam "MCA" Yauch
, Beastie Boys rapper Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz posted a heartfelt note on the band's Tumblr page about his late comrade.

"As you can imagine, s--- is just fkd up right now," he wrote in the blog, which was accompanied by a picture of a hand with the message, "PWR 2 MCA" in front of a bank of CDs. "But I wanna say thank you to all our
friends and family (which are kinda one in the same) for all the love and support.
I'm glad to know that all the love that Yauch has put out into the world is coming right back at him."

Yauch, who died at age 47 on Friday after a three-year battle with cancer, was shouted out by many of his friends, admirers and acts he'd influenced over the weekend. Fun. threw in a verse of "Sabotage" as part of their encore at Washington D.C.'s 9:30 Club on Friday night and "Saturday Night Live" played a clip of the group's 1994 performance of "Sure Shot" on the show featuring Rihanna
as a musical guest. HBO dedicated the broadcast of last month's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony into its broadcast of the proceedings, where the B-Boys were inducted as only the third rap group to enter the the Hall.

Among the luminaries weighing in was exiled Tibetan Buddhist leader the Dalai Lama, who released a statement in which he said, "Adam had helped us raise awareness on the plight of the Tibetan people by organizing various freedom Tibet concerts and he will be remembered by his holiness and the Tibetan people." Yauch, a Buddhist who was behind the landmark all-star Tibetan Freedom concerts
of the late 1990s, was blessed by the Dalai Lama last year.

MTV News also took to the airwaves to express our appreciation for the influential artist with the one-hour special "Adam Yauch: Remembering a Beastie Boy,"
during which we reflected on the legendary MC's career and the indelible mark he made on music as a whole, as well as on society.

Kim Gordon, former bassist for Sonic Youth, who were big supporters of the Tibetan Freedom shows, issued a statement to England's New Musical Express, in which she praised Yauch's lyrical abilities, "He told me once that he really liked the lyrics to [Sonic Youth's] 'Bull In The Heather'. It surprised me that he had even listened to it. It meant a lot to me that he went out of his way to tell me that, coming from such a great rapper and lyricist."

Another Tibetan Freedom supporter and performer, Radiohead's Thom Yorke, posted a remembrance on the band's website, in which he wrote, "I was very sad to hear the news of Adam Yauch's death yesterday.
We looked up to the Beastie Boys a lot when we were starting out and how they maintained artistic control making wicked records but still were on a major label, and the Tibetan Freedom Concerts they organized had a very big influence on me personally and the way Adam conducted himself and dealt with it all impressed me a lot. He was a mellow and v smart guy. May he rest in peace."

The tributes followed earlier ones from the likes of Madonna
, the B-Boys' longtime DJ, Mix Master Mike and Justin Timberlake
as well as in-concert shout-outs from Coldplay and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Share your memories of Adam on Twitter using the hashtag #RIPMCA.

Hands-on with Edgewater's WiFi3

Image

Edgewater may not be a familiar name for even the most tech savvy, but its WiFi3 chipset is poised to propel the wireless industry beyond the limits of traditional access point tech. Aiming to leap past the low power solutions provided by the likes of Cisco, the company's developed a proprietary standard that delivers multiple channels per radio -- three channels over 2.4GHz in the showfloor demo -- versus the typical single channel currently employed. The chipset's not necessarily an end consumer product as it's intended for use by carriers, enterprise and ISPs, but it does stand to clear up the clutter when network congestion gets unwieldy. Check out our galleries below for a closer look at the outfit's next gen step in wireless infrastructure.

Sean Cooper contributed to this report.

New 802.1aq standard promises to improve Ethernet efficiency

Yesterday the IEEE announced an update to the 802.11 WiFi standard, and today it's promptly moving on to the Ethernet side of things. The association just approved the 802.1aq Shortest Path Bridging standard, which will streamline the management and build-out of networks by using the latest-gen VLAN with a higher service capacity. Basically, a larger scale for more efficiency and less errors. Head past the break for the full presser.

HTC One X kernel source code released

Android Central

We're already starting to see a a fairly large selection of custom ROMs for HTC's new hero device, the One X. And development work is sure to be accelerated with the release of the kernel source for the Tegra 3- powered international variant, as is required under the open source rules. The code, which weighs around 111MB, is available for software version 1.26 and 1.28 on a variety of unlocked and branded versions of the One X.

We've yet to see kernel source appearing for the other three HTC One phones -- the One S, One V and One XL (aka AT&T One X) -- but with the appearance of code for the One X today, we'd expect it to land sooner rather than later.

Hit the source link, then select your version and model of choice to pick up the source code.

Gogo grabs 1MHz spectrum from JetBlue subsidiary LiveTV, beefs up in-flight bandwidth

Gogo grabs 1MHz spectrum from JetBlue subsidiary LiveTV, beefs up its in-flight bandwidthIn-flight internet provider Gogo's been increasing its domestic presence of late, so it makes sense for the company to snag some additional spectrum as well. Its new wireless license is for a chunk of 1 MHz spectrum that Gogo got from Live TV, the subsidiary of JetBlue that handles all of that airline's in-air entertainment and communications services. Gogo's new spectrum will augment its existing Air-to-Ground network here in the US -- pending FCC approval, of course -- and provide road (sky?) warriors with a bit more bandwidth once above 10,000 feet. For all you jet-setters, we should mention that your Gulfstream's Airfone bill will be going to Gogo from now on, as LiveTV tossed the venerable voice service in the deal, too.
