Embraer, Boeing to Partner on KC-390 Military Transport Jet

Brazil's leading planemaker Embraer (IW 1000/644) and the U.S. behemoth Boeing (IW 500/15) on Tuesday agreed to share technical know-how and market analysis to spur development of Embraer's KC-390 military aircraft. Luiz Carlos Aguiar, chief executive officer of Embraer's defense and security unit, and Dennis Muilemburg, CEO of Boeing Defense, Space and Security, signed a deal for collaboration on Brazil's medium-lift military transport aircraft. Aguiar said Embraer hopes to capitalize on Boeing's vast knowledge of the global military transport market, including its experience in developing the Boeing C-17. "Boeing has extensive experience in military transport and air refueling aircraft, as well as deep knowledge of potential markets for the KC-390," he told a press conference. Muilenburg said the C-17, a large military transport aircraft used by air forces of several countries, and the KC-390 were "a natural fit." "Our goal is to look for new opportunities to expand the market for the KC-390 and make it as successful globally as the C-17 has been," he added. The collaboration between two of the world's leading aviation firms will take the form of technical information sharing and joint analysis of market prospects for the KC-390. "It will be a partnership of equals that does not involve remuneration, with both sides putting in resources," Aguiar said.

Thyroid Diet Revolution Solves Weight Loss Battle for Millions of ...

Most Popular Weight Loss Products

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) June 26, 2012

Half of all Americans are struggling to lose weight. Simultaneously, an estimated 60 million Americans one out of every five suffer from a thyroid condition. The frightening reality, however, is that the majority of thyroid disease victims don?t even know it yet, because they go undiagnosed. And even with a diagnosis, subtle thyroid imbalances can dramatically affect weight, making it difficult if not impossible to lose weight.

The Thyroid Diet Revolution (HarperCollins Publishers) takes previously unsuccessful dieters by the hand to finally overcome this major and frequently overlooked obstacle to weight loss.

In The Thyroid Diet Revolution, internationally renowned patient advocate and New York Times best-selling author Mary Shomon teaches readers how to cope with thyroid problems, balance hormones, raise metabolism, and ensure that thyroid problems dont get in the way of successful weight loss.

Shomons Thyroid Diet hit The New York Times Best Seller List, became a Top 10 seller on Amazons ?Diet and Weight Loss? Best Sellers List, an Amazon Top 100 Best Seller, and was nominated for the prestigious Quill Award. The number of Americans diagnosed with thyroid disease has more than doubled sinceand thats just a fraction of the millions more who suffer without diagnosis or treatment. The Thyroid Diet Revolution identifies the many hormonal and nutritional factors that get in the way of weight loss and offers much-needed solutions.

Undiagnosed or poorly treated thyroid problems slow metabolism and destabilize hormones so much that it?s not only impossible to lose weight, but people actually gain weight on fewer calories than everyone else. People end up exhausted with no energy for exercise. Its a recipe for diet disaster.

For the millions of undiagnosed thyroid patients, diagnosis and proper treatment may be all that?s needed to successfully restore hormone levels and metabolism to normal and begin to lose weight. The Thyroid Diet Revolution features a detailed Symptoms Checklist along with step-by-step detailed guidelines on how to get properly diagnosed and treated.

The Thyroid Diet Revolution also explains:

1. why the majority of the almost 60 million Americans with thyroid problems haven?t been diagnosed

2. the 3 physical signs that almost GUARANTEE you have an undiagnosed thyroid problem

3. why doctors arent likely to test for this common diet saboteur, and what readers can do

4. why frequent ?mini-meals? may be the WORST thing for weight loss efforts

5. a common-sense look at non-surgical weight-loss treatments, plus the latest on weight loss drugs and surgery

6. new and updated information on the latest supplements, herbs, and vitamins that enhance metabolism, improve energy, balance hormones, control blood sugar, and promote weight loss

7. customized exercise approaches from fitness expert and T-Tapp founder Teresa Tapp, that help fit fitness into regular daily activity, build muscle, and raise metabolism ? without fatigue.

8. reviews and recommendations of the best commercial diet programs for thyroid patients

9. expert mind-body metabolism tips, incorporating the latest in nutritional psychology and neuroendocrinology, to rewire the brain for controlling appetite, balancing hormones, and raising metabolism, along with an integrated diet

The Thyroid Diet Revolution also features the latest findings on the role of hormone balance including thyroid, adrenals and reproductive hormones in effective weight loss, and cutting-edge information about hormone resistance including insulin resistance and leptin resistance and their impact on weight loss. National Academy on Hypothyroidism founder and nationally-esteemed hormone expert Kent Holtorf, MD is one of the leading medical experts featured in the book.

We are facing dual epidemics of both thyroid disease and obesity, yet the medical establishment seems determined to ignore this crucial connection. Undiagnosed or improperly treated thyroid problems sabotage the most rigorous diet and exercise programs. The Thyroid Diet Revolution helps dieters level the playing field, and finally gain control.

Mary Shomon transformed her own health challenges into her current role as an internationally-renowned patient advocate, founder/editor of a series of health newsletters, and as founder/editor of the internets most popular thyroid websites, http://www.thyroid-info.com, and Guide to the About.com Thyroid site, http://thyroid.about.com. She has authored numerous best-selling books on thyroid disease and hormone health in the US and worldwide, and is a member of the American Society of Health Journalists.

RPG Aeon Avenger (for Android)

RPG Aeon Avenger ($3.99) is a pretty good Japanese-style adventure game for Android phones and tablets. While the combat mechanics can get a bit dull, and character advancement is entirely through weapon configuration, the zippy, propulsive plot makes up for a lot.

Aeon Avenger is the tale of a young man who saw his family killed by a black-clad baddie, and the time-traveling priestess he's bringing along for the ride. Other characters join or leave the party at various times as the plot demands, and the story takes place in several dozen locations over three different time periods.

Controls here are a simple virtual D-pad and an action button. A menu bar pops up at the top of the screen during battles. You can tap menu item or enemies directly, or use the D-pad to select them; the D-pad works better on smaller phone screens because some of the interface elements are pretty small.

There's one location scale for the little anime sprites, along with a battle view that shows larger monster images. Rather than walking a world map, you teleport among locations that open up on a static map, like on many console-style games.

Character advancement is a little disappointing. While characters do level up from experience, most skills are acquired through adding magic "bits" to weapons. The bits can be swapped in and out, and different weapons are more useful against different enemies, making equipment management absolutely critical. This feels a lot less personal than a traditional class or skill-based advancement systems. The result is that you get much less attached to the characters.

That said, all the classic gaming elements are here: a plot you want to get to the bottom of, plenty of NPCs to talk to, treasure chests with the next cool magic item, and just enough challenge to keep you occupied. RPG Aeon Avenger isn't a masterpiece like our Editors' Choice Symphony of Eternity ($2.99, 4 stars), but it's definitely worth the four dollars.

The papers that authorities used were general warrants and fell well short of describing the offenses alleged, High Court Judge Helen Winkelmann said.

NCAA football playoff format doesn?t go far enough

The Miami Herald

So the Good Lords of college-affiliated sports grant us a four-team playoff to determine a college-affiliated football champion. For a minute or a few decades there, I thought you had lost your talent for following the money.

Amazing, isn?t it? All those previous alleged impediments ? missed class time (during holiday break?), too much travel for fans used to one bowl game (yeah, that stops the real yahoos), devaluation of the bowl system (that?s already been devalued) ? shrunk into pylons to be negotiated once the money got big enough.

They heard the fans. They heard the hype machine already revving. They heard the sounds of the free market, saw TV gold in them thar hills and only NBA groupies dig for gold better than the powers behind college football.

ESPN reportedly will get first crack at the TV package, which isn?t surprising. You go to the needy first. Disney?s sports network pays big money for live events because it needs to justify the fat fees it charges cable system operators for the privilege of having ESPN as part of its basic package.

Make no mistake, this continues the Bowl Championship Series philosophy of the rich getting richer. An impartial committee will select the teams based on record, strength of schedule, head-to-head competition and whether or not the team wins its conference. Surely said committee won?t take into account national appeal or fan following. Only as a tiebreaker, of course.

Theoretically, this gives the Boise States of the world a shot to get into the mix. In practice, the committee might throw such teams a bone every two or three years, when the howling at the door gets loudest.

I say, what the heck? In for a penny, in for a pound, don?t give us just bacon and pig?s feet, let?s go whole hog.

There?s 11 BCS conferences overall if the WAC gets whacked by the time the Heat finishes taking their deserved victory laps. Why not make it a 12-team tournament? The conference champions plus an independent or wild card conference team to be chosen by the committee. The top four teams of the current playoff get a bye into the second round while the other eight play the first round. The whole thing could start the week before Christmas and run through the normal bowl season.

Already I can hear, ?What do you tell the second best team in a conference, say, the SEC, who?s clearly three touchdowns better than the champion of Conference USA?? Same thing you say to the No. 5 team now: tough spit.

The men?s NCAA basketball tournament used to be that way. It became March Madness when its expansion in teams met college basketball parity and some wildly exciting upsets and championship games ensued. A 64-team, 63-game football tournament is impractical. But a 12-team, 11-game tournament would expand the college-affiliated football playoff to its maximum density of games.

An upset or two in the early rounds would lead to both immense blowouts and monster upsets in the second round, as some of those top four seeded teams come in rusty and have their maturity tested. Those who get it together win big and roll into the semifinal round. Those who don?t find themselves listed with great teams that didn?t win it all like 1983 Nebraska.

That reminds me: Now that we?ve got a playoff system in place, can we acknowledge how ridiculous the polls were and retroactively eliminate calling anyone a ?national champion? if they played before, say, 1979? That?s when ABC, the only network broadcasting college football weekly at the time, really opened up its TV schedule. Before that, voters, whether coaches or media, saw only a handful of teams live, on TV or via highlights.

It has been a long road from there to here. Let?s finish the journey. The cash can be counted along the way.

Federer, Roddick win at Wimbledon, Wozniacki upset

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) ? Roger Federer gave Prince Charles a bow, then gave Fabio Fognini a royal thumping.

With the Prince of Wales visiting Wimbledon for the first time since 1970, Federer was at his best Wednesday and beat Fognini 6-1, 6-3, 6-2.

Federer, a six-time winner at the All England Club, won 37 of 41 points on his first serve and 21 of 23 points at the net against Fognini, an Italian ranked 68th.

Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall sat in the first row of the Royal Box as Federer walked onto Centre Court for the day's first match. He and Fognini stood side by side as they bowed awkwardly toward the royals, and Charles responded with a wave and grin.

"They do brief you beforehand," Federer said. "I guess you don't do anything stupid. You behave. Obviously we were asked to bow, which is obviously no problem to do. We're thrilled for the tennis family that they came to watch Wimbledon today."

When Federer completed his victory, Charles and Camilla joined the crowd's applause. He visited with the royal couple afterward for several minutes, talking about tennis, polo and Federer's young twin daughters.

"They were very nice, very sweet and thought I played great," Federer said, "which was very nice to get some compliments after the match, which was unnecessary, but of course I do appreciate it."

Seeded third, Federer hopes to end his 2?-year drought in major tournaments, and he's off to a good start, losing only nine games through two rounds. He seeks to add to his record total of 16 Grand Slam championships, and he could match the record of seven Wimbledon men's titles set by William Renshaw in the 1880s and tied by Pete Sampras in 2000.

"I'm just happy overall with how I'm playing," Federer said. "I'm serving well when I have to. I'm moving well. I feel like my forehand and backhand are working well. All of a sudden you win quite comfortably, but you have to focus until the very last point, and I'm happy as well with my concentration level."

Shortly after Federer's victory, rain interrupted play, and the retractable roof on Centre Court was closed for the first time in the tournament. Former No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki lost under the cover to Tamira Paszek, who saved two match points in the second set and won 5-7, 7-6 (4), 6-4.

Other Grand Slam champions advancing included Kim Clijsters and Andy Roddick, while reigning U.S. Open champion Samantha Stosur lost. More than a dozen matches on outside courts were postponed until Thursday.

Top-ranked Maria Sharapova led 7-6 (3), 3-1 when her second-round match against Tsvetana Pironkova was suspended because of darkness. Sharapova saved five set points in the first set.

Sloane Stephens, a 19-year-old American playing at Wimbledon for the first time, saved five set points in the first set and beat No. 23 Petra Cetkovska 7-6 (6), 4-6, 6-3. In the final set, Stephens trailed love-30 in four consecutive service games, yet won them all.

"I'm 19 and I do still have some lapses," she said. "They're less now than I used to have in the past. I really don't get as upset when I lose points now. I'm not that emotional anymore."

Stephens is coming off her first run to the fourth round at a Grand Slam tournament, which happened this month at the French Open.

Heather Watson became the first British woman to reach the third round since 2002 when she defeated American Jamie Hampton 6-1, 6-4.

Sara Errani needed only seven seconds to complete a rain-interrupted win, and she didn't even have to hit a ball.

Errani led American CoCo Vandeweghe 6-1, 5-3 and held the advantage one point from victory when their match was halted Tuesday evening. They returned to Court 16 some 18 hours later, and when Vandeweghe double-faulted into the net on the first point, Errani had the win.

No. 21-seeded Milos Raonic required only one game to complete a rain-interrupted first-round win over Santiago Giraldo, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. No. 7 David Ferrer reached the second round by beating Dustin Brown 7-6 (5), 6-4, 6-4.

Three-time Wimbledon runner-up Roddick needed three hours over two days to complete a first-round win over British wild card Jamie Baker, 7-6 (1), 6-4, 7-5.

Clijsters, a four-time major champion playing Wimbledon for the final time, advanced to the third round by beating Andrea Hlavackova 6-3, 6-3.

The No. 5-seeded Stosur fell to 6-10 at Wimbledon when she was upset by 72nd-ranked Arantxa Rus 6-2, 0-6, 6-4. Her elimination meant that for the first time since 1939, no Australian man or woman reached the third round at Wimbledon.

No. 13 Dominika Cibulkova lost to Klara Zakopalova 6-4, 6-1. Former No. 1 Ana Ivanovic beat Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

American Mardy Fish said he declined interviews after his first-round victory because of a stomach problem related to pain medication he's taking for his right arm ? and not related to his heart. He expects to be ready for his second-round match Thursday.

Fish spoke to reporters Wednesday, a day after he beat Ruben Ramirez-Hidalgo in straight sets. It was the first match for Fish since a medical procedure in May to try to pinpoint an accelerated heartbeat.

Federer took only 23 minutes to win the first set and continued to pull away. The inconsistent Fognini fell to 1-16 against top-10 players but did manage some spectacular shots, and the players shared smiles after several improbable points that had the crowd roaring.

There was a brief moment of drama when Federer slipped behind the baseline after hitting a forehand. His legs splayed and his left knee landed hard on the grass.

"I'm fine," he said. "No pain, which is good. It could be dangerous with the left knee. I'm happy it was only basically a bruise to the ground, and not anything in the knee itself."

Chinese astronauts go hands-on, manually dock with orbiting module

DNP Chinese astronauts go handson, manually dock with orbiting module

Looks like China continues to add to its space cred after recently joining the rarefied ranks of countries that have successfully docked craft in the final frontier. Fresh off from the recent joining of the Shenzhou 9 capsule with the Tiangong 1 orbiting module, China's three astronauts have now replicated the feat manually, according to the Washington Post . For the uninitiated, the first docking was done via remote control from the ground. The mission has had plenty of firsts for China so far, including the country's first female astronaut. It also serves as a precursor to establishing China's first permanent space station, a 60-ton facility that's about a sixth of the size of the International Space Station but is slightly bigger than NASA's old Skylab. 'Cause sometimes, you just gotta have your own space in space, you know?

Dyke Marsh, A Natural Retreat Near Alexandria, Is Shrinking (PHOTOS)

ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- On a recent Sunday morning, Christine Hoskins and George Vargas were among the many people going for a walk along the nature trail at the Dyke Marsh, which is one of the D.C. area's biggest, though rapidly-eroding, tidal wetlands along the Potomac River. Most other visitors had dogs with them, or fishing poles, or binoculars for bird-watching. Hoskins and Vargas were there with their ferrets Rikki and Bells.

"This is a nice place to bring them," said Vargas, watching one of the ferrets leap into some shrubbery. "They really enjoy it."

How long they will get to keep enjoying the marsh is uncertain.

The Smoot Sand and Gravel Company's dredging, from the 1940s until the early 1970s, made the marsh "geologically unstable," according to a report put out by the U.S. Geological Survey in 2011.

The marsh, which the USGS estimates began forming over 500 years ago, has continued to shrink rapidly even since mining stopped, both from human and natural causes. WAMU-FM reported some alarming figures in March:

"In terms of feet of shoreline per year, the current estimate for shoreward erosion is probably 6 to 8 feet a year," says Ron Litwin, a researcher with the U.S. Geological Survey. "Since 2002 to the present, it's an acre and a half a year."

More than a football field's worth of marsh is swept away every year, tree-by-tree, reed-by-reed.

"Now the entire marsh is 53 acres out of an original 183 acres," says Litwin.

When George Washington was surveying the Alexandria area, in the mid-1700s, he said that Dyke Marsh was a "fine improvable marsh." (You can read this quote on an interpretive sign.) The group Friends of Dyke Marsh now estimates Dyke Marsh will be gone in 30 to 40 years due to erosion. Comments on the National Park Service's various proposals for restoring (or not restoring) the marsh were due on Wednesday. Advocates like some of the park service's ideas; the ideas also have detractors.

So the future is rather grim and uncertain. But for now: "This is the best part of my day," said Hoskins. "It's a beautiful morning out here. You get to assemble your thoughts. Watch ferrets enjoy themselves."

Enjoy your own day at Dyke Marsh (driving directions; public transportation directions). Rent canoes, kayaks or sailboats at the Belle Haven Marina. Diet Soda Makes Overeating - HEALTHY HOUSE

Diet soda often be an option for people who are dieting are not willing to leave the soft drinks. This drink is claimed to have low calorie content. However, research shows that the effects of diet soda can actually make obesity.

Researchers from the University of California and San Diego State University in the United States found that diet soda can lead to overeating which can lead to obesity. When saccharin into the bloodstream, chemical reactions occur in the brain that makes it happen.

Prior to the conclusion, the scientists tested 24 healthy young adults. Half of the participants are drinking diet soda, while the other half drank sodas infrequently. They conducted a series of brain tests while given low doses of saccharin and sugar water. The participants were then asked to rate the taste.
When participants are given a drink to swallow, brain scans showed that different parts of the brain light up in between the two groups of volunteers. It appears that when people who are drinking diet soda with artificial sweeteners water consumption, activation of brain areas associated with reduced food motivation.

At a certain level, the brain can sort out the calorie-free sweetener with sugar. However, the brains of people who often drink diet soda, at least once a day, becomes confused and can not distinguish between them. If this happens, your calorie intake and energy consumption can not be calculated. As a result, the person thought to be more to eat.

According to Susan Swithers of Purdue University, United States, the different responses to sweet taste is based on the frequency of drinking diet soda is not much of a concern. "Normally, the brain is used to connect between sweetness and calories they contain to regulate food intake. However, when the bonus calorie sweet foods, the brain becomes not know what to do," she said.

As a result, the body learns to ignore the sweet taste in terms of predicting the energy content in it. This is associated with increased risk of obesity

Panetta: Only a 'small handful' of top al-Qaida targets left

Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta (right) exchanges greetings with Saudi Defense Minister Crown Prince Salman bin Abd al-Aziz Al Saud.

By Reuters

Nearly one year ago, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta predicted the strategic defeat of al-Qaida was within reach if the United States could kill or capture up to 20 leaders of the core group and its affiliates.

In an interview with Reuters, Panetta disclosed that only a "small handful" of the individuals on that original list remained on the battlefield and that Saudi Arabia -- the birthplace of late al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden -- was reporting a drop-off in recruitment.

"We've not only impacted on their leadership, we've impacted on their capability to provide any kind of command and control in terms of operations," Panetta said Thursday.

The White House has confirmed the death of al-Qaida leader Abu Yahya al-Libi in a weekend drone strike in Pakistan. NBC's Jim Miklaszewski reports.

The U.S. defense chief visited Saudi Arabia on Wednesday and, after paying U.S. condolences over the death of the late crown prince, spoke about al-Qaida with one of his sons, Saudi Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, who has run the kingdom's operations against the terror network as a deputy interior minister.

"I asked him the question, ?As a result of the bin Laden raid, as a result of what we've done to their leadership, where are we with al-Qaida??" Panetta recounted, adding that al-Qaida and bin Laden "came out of Saudi Arabia."

"Bin Nayef said, ?For the first time, what I'm seeing is that young people are no longer attracted to al-Qaida in Saudi Arabia,'" he said.

Panetta did not single out which leaders from his target list last year remained, but current al-Qaida chief Ayman al-Zawahri is one he named last year. He is still believed to be living in the border region of Afghanistan and Pakistan.

SITE via AP

Asked how many targets remained, Panetta said, "It's a small handful and it's growing smaller all the time."

Panetta to Pakistan: 'Time to move on'
On other topics, Panetta in the interview:

  • Defended the U.S. decision not to arm opponents of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, but said he was concerned that shoulder-fired missiles stolen from Libya last year could make their way to Syria. He said he had seen no direct intelligence yet suggesting they had.
  • All but ruled out an apology over an air strike last year that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers, as Islamabad has demanded, saying it was "time to move on" in the troubled U.S.-Pakistan relationship.
  • Said Iraq had given assurances to the United States that it would not release a suspected Hezbollah operative accused of killing American troops, whom the United States turned over to Iraqi custody last December just before the last U.S. troops exited the country.

Drones, computers new weapons of US shadow wars

After addressing questions about the future of al-Qaida's top leadership, Panetta shifted his focus to the group's ability to survive as a movement at all.

"We'll keep the pressure on at the top and we'll keep going after their leadership," Panetta said.

"But the real issue that will determine the end of al-Qaida is when they find it difficult to recruit any new people,? he added.

The killing of bin Laden in a covert U.S. raid in Pakistan last year has been followed by a series of unmanned aerial attacks that have crushed al-Qaida's network along Pakistan's border with Afghanistan.

Taliban kill 9 hotel guests, take 50 hostage in Kabul attack

The latest high-profile al-Qaida leader killed in the U.S. campaign was Abu Yahya al-Libi, the group's second-in-command, who broke out of a high-security U.S. prison in neighboring Afghanistan in 2005 and was a key strategist.

Beyond the Afghan-Pakistan region, another key figure killed last year was Anwar al-Awlaki, an American imam who became a senior leader of al-Qaida's Yemen-based affiliate.

While successful tactically, the drone strikes have further poisoned U.S.-Pakistan relations and, critics say, raise questions about international law and could boost militant recruiting.

Only about eight hard-core al-Qaida leaders are still believed to be based in the lawless borderlands of Afghanistan and Pakistan, compared with dozens a few years ago.

(AP) ? The leaders of France, Germany, Italy and Spain have agreed to push for a growth package worth up to ?130 billion ($163 billion) at a European Union summit next week that's intended to kick-start the economy and safeguard the currency bloc.

President Francois Hollande of France, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and Italian Premier Mario Monti, playing host, provided few details beyond agreement on pursuing a financial transaction tax ? something Germany has championed.

Economists said the size of the growth package would be modest, about 1 percent of the euro alliance's gross domestic product. But they said it marked a recognition by Merkel that more government spending would be needed.

"It is at least a step in the right direction," said Ted Truman, a former international economics advisor at the Federal Reserve and at the Treasury Department in the Obama administration. "The tone has changed, in part because the German economy has not been doing as well recently."

Merkel has come under rising pressure to give ground on key pro-growth measures.

"We say that growth and solid financials are two sides of a coin," she said. "Solid financials are not sufficient."

Monti, who met with his fellow leaders at a government villa in Rome, is trying to build a bridge between Merkel's insistence on fiscal discipline and the focus on growth by recently elected Hollande. He acknowledged that steps taken so far have not been sufficient, and that markets and European Union citizens alike need to view the euro currency as "irreversible."

"We maintain that if four countries as important and diversified as ours can find a convergent line, this can help force a strong consensus at the EU Council," Monti told a closing press conference.

Monti has warned of severe consequences for the 17 countries that use the euro and the world economy if next week's summit fails.

"A large part of Europe would find itself having to continue to put up with very high interest rates, that would then impact on the states, and also indirectly on firms. This is the direct opposite of what is needed for economic growth," Monti said in an interview with six European newspapers published Friday.

Without a successful outcome at the summit "there will be progressively greater speculative attacks on individual countries, with harassment of the weaker countries," Monti said.

The ?130 billion growth package discussed at the Rome meeting could include funds from unspent European Union structural funds, the European Investment Bank and European "project bonds" ? debt sold to finance cross-border infrastructure projects.

Yet it's hardly a long-term answer to the crisis.

"We still have miles to go before we get to any meaningful solutions to Europe's problems," said Sung Won Sohn, an economics professor at the Martin Smith School of Business at California State University.

A major challenge, Sohn noted, is how to strengthen Europe's banking system.

The European Central Bank said Friday that it will make it easier for banks to receive its loans by accepting more kinds of securities as collateral. The shift could support Spain's hard-pressed lenders, though it means more risk for the ECB's own finances.

Europe's banks will have greater access to ready cash amid the turmoil of the region's debt crisis. The ECB has been offering unlimited loans at its 7-day, one-month and three-month credit offerings to steady the banking system. But banks must have something they can put up as collateral.

The proposed financial transaction tax would charge banks 0.1 percent of the value of sales of stocks or bonds, and 0.01 percent per derivative contract with the proceeds going to fund future bank bailouts. However, at a meeting of finance ministers from the 27 countries in the European Union in Luxembourg Friday, only 10 member countries were prepared to support the idea.

The Rome meeting caps an intense week for Europe in which markets have been roiled on fears that the region's governments will not come up with adequate measures to fight the debt crisis and that Spain and Italy might soon need bailouts that the rest of the eurozone could not afford.

There are fears that an economic crack-up in Europe could drag down the entire global economy. Europe is a substantial trading partner with the rest of the world. Any deep recession in Europe will be felt in the order books of other leading economies ? including the U.S.

At a meeting of Eurozone finance ministers in Luxembourg on Thursday night, the head of the International Monetary Fund warned that the euro was under "acute stress" and urged leaders to consider measures ? including jointly issuing debt ? to alleviate the pressure on the region's debt-stricken members.

"We are clearly seeing additional tension and acute stress applying to both banks and sovereigns in the euro area," Christine Lagarde said at a meeting of finance ministers late Thursday.

Germany has strenuously opposed the issue of joint debt ? or eurobonds ? because, while it would immediately ease pressure on countries like Spain, German taxpayers would be put on the hook for foreign debts, and Germany's cost of borrowing would increase.

Asked in Luxembourg what Germany would think of her suggestions, Lagarde smiled and said "We hope wisdom will prevail."

Lagarde also Thursday said it was necessary to break "the negative feedback loop" that occurs when governments take on more debt to bail out their banks.

In Rome, Hollande said eurobonds need to remain a possibility "and not in 10 years," without specifying a timeframe. Rajoy spoke favorably about Monti's proposal to use bailout funds to buy bonds of vulnerable countries like Italy and Spain on secondary markets.

The leaders said they would spend the coming days lobbying their EU counterparts.

A growing number of international leaders have called on Merkel and the eurozone to find quickly a comprehensive solution to the debt crisis rather than continuing to take piecemeal measures that provide only temporary relief. At this week's G-20 summit of world economic powers in Los Cabos, Mexico, politicians, including U.S. President Barack Obama, called on Europe to do what was necessary.

Speaking at an economic forum in St. Petersburg, David Lipton, first deputy managing director at the International Monetary Fund, urged European leaders to act quickly: "The markets are beginning to question the viability of the European monetary union itself. It's very important that eurozone countries address the long-run question: Where is the architecture of the European monetary union going?"

"It's good that there is recognition that they have to move beyond austerity," said Luis Garicano, head of economics and strategy at the London School of Economics. "But the big decision is not the move beyond austerity, it is to set up the short-term and long-term architecture for the Euro to separate the sovereign risk and the financial risk."

The meeting was moved up by a few hours to give Merkel time to fly to Poland to watch Germany play Greece in a European Championship quarterfinal match. The game pits the teams of Europe's strongest economy, Germany, against the eurozone's most troubled, Greece. The just-installed Greek leader had no immediate plans to attend.

Windows Phone 8 to start on HTC, Huawei, Nokia and Samsung devices with support for 180 countries

Windows Phone 8 to start on HTC, Huawei, Nokia and Samsung devices with support for 180 countries

When Windows Phone 8 arrives in the fall, it will have a relatively narrow slice of hardware makers: HTC, Huawei, Nokia and Samsung will represent the first wave. That's excluding some significant partners that have surfaced even over the past year, including ZTE. When they do ship, though, all of them will be using new Qualcomm processors; we have a hunch that's code for Snapdragon S4 variants. There certainly won't be any shortage of regional support with apps available over 180 countries and 50 languages accounted for -- more than Apple mentioned as attached to iOS 6, Microsoft is keen to add. While the number of hardware launches isn't likely to come that close anytime soon, it does mean that phone designers will have considerable more flexibility as to where they launch.

To check out the latest updates from Microsoft's Windows Phone event, visit our liveblog!

Update: Not to miss a good opportunity, Huawei has issued a press release to announce that its Ascend Windows Phone 8 handset will launch first in the US, Europe and China, with other countries to follow. You'll find the full spiel after the break.

Social Media Congruency ? Watch What You Say! | Work Media ...

Our company does a fair amount of work with law firms, and reading an article that one of our clients sent us to post to its website really got me thinking about something. The article was about how insurance companies have started using social media as a way to investigate people who have made disability claims. They will devote a LOT of time to looking at your social media activity, going so far as to make up fake accounts that they use to befriend the subject of investigation to get a better look at their updates. In other words, if a guy who says he is down in his back posts pictures of himself on Facebook lifting something heavy, then that is damaging evidence to his disability claim.

What does this have to do with you? Beyond the obvious (if you file a disability claim, stay off the social media sites!), I think the lesson is that your social media image needs to be congruent with the image you present to prospective clients and referral sources. If you represent yourself one way, but then a prospective client sees you another way online, then you create the impression of dishonesty.

Example: let?s say your public image is one of a church-attending, God-fearing Christian, but then you use profanity or post links to obscene material, then your actions belie your image. That is an extreme example, but you get the point.

I am not saying that your social media updates need to sterile and empty of personality. Social media is most successful when you do display a personality and talk about things happening in your world beyond just business affairs. BUT?when you do an update, you need to think: Are the words I am using here contrary to how I present myself to potential clients?

Unless it is related to your business or expected of you based on what you do, avoid heavy use of profanity. Avoid linking to photos containing nudity. Avoid linking to anything spammy. What you link to, and the words you use, are a reflection of who you are. You want that reflection to jive with how you purposely try to portray yourself.

The reason this is so important is that it is highly likely someone considering hiring you or purchasing your product/service will research you online. That is the nature of business these days. There are no secrets, and there is nowhere to hide. Unless you just don?t do any online marketing, but then you?re just cutting off your nose to spite your face, as the old saying goes. Social media is a very important part of your Internet marketing toolbox, so you need to use it. But use it wisely, lest you risk doing more harm than good.

This applies to the real word as well. An associate in our office tells of a dental practice he knows of in which the dentist is an avid gun collector (nothing wrong with that) who often has shady-looking characters coming into his practice during business hours to deliver a gun he has purchased. You don?t want shady characters walking into your business carrying guns, unless you are in the business of dealing guns.

Congruency is the key here. Don?t try to be someone you?re not, and if you do, make sure you pretend to be that same person when you get online. If you could use some assistance in your online marketing, Work Media is here to help. We are a full-service firm offering an array of services to help companies engage in online commerce, including SEO, paid search, and yes, social media management.
