Tina Fey slams 'legitimate rape' remarks

Tina Fey speaks at the Center for Reproductive Rights Inaugural Gala at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York on Wednesday.

By Josh Grossberg, E! Online

Tina Fey has a bone to pick with politician Todd Akin over his comments on "legitimate rape."

Speaking at the Center for Reproductive Rights' Inaugural Gala in New York Wednesday night, the "30 Rock" star called out the Missouri Republican Senate candidate over his assertion in an August TV interview?that rape victims have a slim chance of getting pregnant because the body "has ways to try to shut the whole thing down."

"Todd Akin claims that women can't really get pregnant from a legitimate rape because the body secretes hormones," Fey told the crowd. "Now I can't even finish this sentence without getting dumber; it's making me dumber when I say it--but it's something about the body not being able to get pregnant when it's under physical stress. Mr. Akin, I think you are confusing the phrase 'legitimate rape' with the phrase 'competitive gymnastics.'"

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosting 2013 Golden Globes

The funnylady's wisecrack isn't surprising, given that she's never shied away from addressing such hot-button topics dating back to her days anchoring Weekend Update on "Saturday Day Night Live." But as a woman, Fey clearly took offense to Akin's controversial view, which has been tacitly accepted by many ultraconservative anti-abortion activists.

"If I have to listen to one more gray-faced man with a two-dollar haircut explain to me what rape is, I'm gonna lose my mind," Fey added. "I watch these guys and I'm, like, 'What is happening? Am I a secretary on 'Mad Men'? What's happening?'"

We wonder what the comic actress's alter ego, Sarah Palin, has to say about it.

The Center for Reproductive Rights is a global legal advocacy group dedicated to advancing and defending reproductive rights, and Fey was tapped to open up last night's program, which honored extraordinary leaders who have blazed new trails for women.

Other celebs in attendance included Stanley Tucci, Jane Seymour, Tate Donovan and Janeane Garofalo.

Syria Agrees To Ceasefire During Eid Al-Adha Holiday, Peace Envoy Lakhdar Brahimi Says

CAIRO (AP) ? The U.N.-Arab League envoy to Syria says the Syrian government and some rebel leaders have agreed to a ceasefire during the upcoming Muslim four-day holiday.

Lakhdar Brahimi told reporters in Cairo on Wednesday that the government of Syrian President Bashar Assad will issue a statement on accepting a truce today or tomorrow. The Eid al-Adha holiday begins Friday.

Brahimi didn't elaborate on how such a truce would be monitored.

The fighting in Syria has killed more than 34,000 people since March last year, according to activists.

Social media sensation dies of cancer at age 13

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) ? Lane Goodwin, a small-town boy who won a huge Facebook following for his thumbs-up attitude about his cancer, has lost his battle with the disease.

The 13-year-old Kentuckian died Wednesday night, eliciting an outpouring from his heartbroken followers.

The announcement of Lane's death came on his Facebook page, which had 369,000 followers as of Thursday. The announcement said the boy from Beech Grove who loved fishing and soccer had "gained his angel wings."

University of Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari was among the many whose thoughts and prayers were with Lane's family.

"Let's all give one more thumbs up for Lane," Calipari tweeted.

Lane was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, and some Cardinals fans held up signs in support of Lane during the baseball playoffs.

Lane was diagnosed with Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare form of cancer, in 2010. He completed chemotherapy treatments late that year, but had a relapse in the summer of 2011.

The Thumbs-up for Lane campaign, started as a way to encourage the boy and his family, spread worldwide on social media. His followers included country music stars, athletes, politicians and Ernie Brown ? the cable television star known as "The Turtleman."

Brown was Lane's favorite celebrity. The homespun star known for getting rid of unwanted reptiles and other critters with his bare hands had visited Lane's home in western Kentucky a few weeks ago. They hit it off from the start, Brown recalled Thursday.

Lane told Brown how he once hooked a shark. He showed Brown his room, filled with pictures of "Turtleman."

"We sat there and talked and talked and just had a good old time," said Brown, who choked up with emotion while remembering his young friend. "We got up and did the 'Turtleman' dance until he got worn out."

Brown said Lane was an inspiration to others.

"People really looked up to him," he added. "He sure made his mark in the world and he'll never be forgotten."

Lane's family's issued a statement remembering his "beautiful smile" and his Christian faith." The family thanked his many supporters for their "incredible display of human kindness."

"We have been amazed and touched by the worldwide thumbs-up movement in honor of Lane," the family said.

"Lane believed that the awareness this movement brought for childhood cancers would lead to a cure. Lane's legacy will live on as we move forward with the commitment we made to him to find a cure."

Funeral arrangements are pending.

Mayfly with springtail hitchhiker: Amber specimen -- 16 million years old -- reveals unknown animal behaviors

ScienceDaily (Oct. 17, 2012) ? Stunning images, including video footage, from a CT scan of amber have revealed the first evidence of any creature using an adult mayfly for transport.

Researchers at the University of Manchester say this 16-million-year-old hitchhiker most likely demonstrates activity that is taking place today but has never previously been recorded.

Entombed in amber the tiny springtail can be seen resting in a v-shaped depression at the base of one of the mayfly's wings. It appears to have secured itself for transport using its prehensile antennae.

Dr David Penney and colleagues from the Faculty of Life Sciences and the School of Materials used a high resolution CT scanner to take over 3,000 X-rays from different angles.

The scientists then created slices, showing the fossil in cross sections. From these slices 3D digital images of the springtail were made so an accurate analysis of its behaviour could be conducted.

Dr Penney says: "The images are really impressive. This pioneering approach to studying fossils has allowed us an insight into the behaviour of one of the world's most prevalent organisms."

Springtails are minute creatures (usually only 1-2mm long) related to true insects. They're found around the world in great numbers, including here in the UK. Gardeners will recognise them as the tiny insects that hop around when soil is disturbed. They readily colonize newly-formed islands but very little is known about how they manage to migrate. One of the reasons is that they are incredibly nervous creatures and have an astonishing ability to leap away from danger using a springing organ (the furca) on the underside of the abdomen, which makes observing them in life very difficult.

Interestingly, when the 3D image of the springtail in amber is magnified it's possible to see that the springtail is very slightly detached (by just 50 micrometres) from the mayfly. This suggests it was attempting to spring away as the amber set around it.

Only one previous case of phoresy (the transportation of one organism by another) has been recorded for springtails. This was found in a piece of Baltic amber where five springtails were hooked in a row on the leg of a harvestman arachnid.

It was this discovery in 2010 which prompted Dr Penney to take a closer look at his own specimen. "I had initially thought the creature on the mayfly may have been a tiny nymphal pseudoscorpion, as they are known to use other creatures for transport, and this behaviour is not uncommon to see in amber. I was interested in the fact that this was the first time a creature had been found on an adult mayfly but I didn't truly appreciate the significance of my find until I used the CT scanner and was able to identify the animal as a springtail."

Phoresy in adult mayflies has never before been recorded. They live for just a short period of time from one hour to a few days depending on the species. The primary function of the adult stage is reproduction and they are unable to feed. This makes it very difficult to study mayflies in their natural habitat and record instances of phoresy.

The amber specimen encasing the mayfly and the springtail provides an accurate snapshot of behaviour that scientists wouldn't otherwise be able to record, highlighting one important application of the fossil record for understanding the present. The near perfect condition of the mayfly demonstrates that it died instantaneously and wasn't moved far from where it rested when the resin ran over it. Equally the position of the springtail resting on the back of the mayfly and the fact that it is in contact with the creature means the pair were unlikely to have been brought together by the resin as it moved down the tree.

The details of Dr Penney's research has been published in the journal, PLOS ONE. More analysis of amber using CT scans is continuing.

Dr Penney says: "The CT scan allows us to build up a 3D image that catches minute details of the animal. We can rotate the image to see parts of the creature that are obscured when looking from the outside in. In effect, we are able to digitally dissect the fossil without causing any damage to it whatsoever. This technology has revolutionised how we study fossils and the findings are incredibly exciting."

Initiative Unveiled to Increase ICANN's Presence and Participation ...

Wednesday, 17 October 2012 Staff Author | Published in: World News TORONTO, Canada, October 17, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- Leaders of Africa's Internet community have unveiled a comprehensive plan designed to dramatically increase African involvement in ICANN's multi-stakeholder model.

The initiative was presented to ICANN (http://www.icann.org) during the organization's 45th public meeting in Toronto, Canada by the Africa Strategy Working Group (ASWG). It was formed after ICANN's new President and Chief Executive Officer, Fadi Chehad? encouraged a stronger voice from the African continent in ICANN's multi-stakeholder model.

Logo: http://www.photos.apo-opa.com/plog-content/images/apo/logos/icann.jpg

?When we met three months ago at the ICANN meeting in Prague, I felt a sense of frustration at our inability to come together and move the Africa agenda forward,? said Chehad?. ?It's incredible what this working group has achieved in such a short period of time by engaging with many concerned groups and individuals through the multi-stakeholder process.?

?We employed a bottom-up, open and public process in developing this initiative,? said Nii Quaynor of Ghana, a well-respected Internet leader in Africa and Chair of the ASWG. ?We think this plan will lead to dramatically increased African participation in ICANN and greater presence for the organization on the African continent.?

The plan was written with the input and broad support of ICANN's African community, Africa's Regional Registry for Internet Number Resources (AFRINIC) and other influential African organizations involved in the Internet ecosystem.

?We are taking a new approach to Africa,? said Tarek Kamel, a Senior Advisor to the ICANN President. ?This plan is based on capacity building, business development, specifically developing the Domain Name System (DNS) business in Africa and insuring inclusion.?

The three year initiative, entitled ICANN's New Approach to Africa, lays out clear goals and milestones and an action plan for the first 12 months. It is a collaborative effort by AFRINIC, Africa's Regional Registry for Internet Number Resources and the ICANN community. The initiative will now be posted for public comment.

Currently, African internet users represent only 6 per cent of Internet users worldwide. This initiative is designed to dramatically increase that number.

About ICANN: ICANN's mission is to ensure a stable, secure and unified global Internet (http://www.icann.org). To reach another person on the Internet you have to type an address into your computer - a name or a number. That address has to be unique so computers know where to find each other. ICANN coordinates these unique identifiers across the world. Without that coordination we wouldn't have one global Internet. ICANN was formed in 1998. It is a not-for-profit public-benefit corporation with participants from all over the world dedicated to keeping the Internet secure, stable and interoperable. It promotes competition and develops policy on the Internet's unique identifiers. ICANN doesn't control content on the Internet. It cannot stop spam and it doesn't deal with access to the Internet. But through its coordination role of the Internet's naming system, it does have an important impact on the expansion and evolution of the Internet. Evolution mostly driven by brawn, not brains

Evolution mostly driven by brawn, not brains [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 15-Oct-2012

The most common measure of intelligence in animals, brain size relative to body size, may not be as dependent on evolutionary selection on the brain as previously thought, according to a new analysis by scientists.

Brain size relative to body size has been used by generations of scientists to predict an animal's intelligence. For example, although the human brain is not the largest in the animal kingdom in terms of volume or mass, it is exceptionally large considering our moderate body mass.

Now, a study by a team of scientists at UCL, the University of Konstanz, and the Max Planck Institute of Ornithology has found that the relationship between the two traits is driven by different evolutionary mechanisms in different animals.

Crucially, researchers have found that the most significant factor in determining relative brain size is often evolutionary pressure on body size, and not brain size. For example, the evolutionary history of bats reveals they decreased body size much faster than brain size, leading to an increase in relative brain size. As a result, small bats were able to evolve improved flying manoeuvrability while maintaining the brainpower to handle foraging in cluttered environments.

This shows that relative brain size can not be used unequivocally as evidence of selection for intelligence. The study is published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Dr Jeroen Smaers (UCL Anthropology and UCL Genetics, Evolution & Environment), lead author of the study said: "When using brain size relative to body size as a measure of intelligence, the assumption has always been that this measure is primarily driven by changes in brain size. It now appears that the relationship between changes in brain and body size in animals is more complex than has long been assumed.

"Changes in body size often occur independently of changes in brain size and vice versa. Moreover, the nature of these independent changes in brain and body size, are different in different groups of animals."

Researchers at UCL gathered data on brain and body mass for hundreds of modern and extinct bats, carnivorans, and primates. They then charted brain and body size evolution over time for each species. Across millions of years, most animals increased body size faster than brain size, with the exception of bats.

In primate lineages decreases in brain size marginally outpaced those in body size. Carnivoran evolution has taken yet a different course, with changes generally more strongly associated with body size rather than selection on brain size and cognition.

Given such differences, the authors believe that the predominant interpretation of relative brain size as the consequence of selection on intelligence inherently masks the often more significant influence of selection on body size.

Turkey cites Srebrenica in appeal for action on Syria

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan rebuked the U.N. Security Council for inaction over Syria on Saturday, saying the world body was repeating mistakes that led to massacres in Bosnia in the 1990s.

President Bashar al-Assad's forces used air strikes and artillery to bombard insurgents on several fronts in Syria, as the 19-month-old conflict risks dragging in regional powers.

Turkey is increasingly entangled after intercepting a Syrian airliner carrying what it said were Russian-made munitions for the Syrian army, infuriating Moscow and Damascus. It has led calls for intervention, including no-fly zones enforced by foreign aircraft to stop deadly air raids by Assad's forces.

But there is little chance of U.N. support for robust action. China insists any solution to Syria's crisis must come from within while Russia has said many Syrians still support Assad. Western nations meanwhile are loath to commit to any military action that could touch off a regional sectarian war.

"The U.N. Security Council has not intervened in the human tragedy that has been going on in Syria for 20 months, despite all our efforts," Erdogan told a conference in Istanbul attended by leaders including Arab League Secretary General Nabil Elaraby. "There's an attitude that encourages, gives the green light to Assad to kill tens or hundreds of people every day."

The bloodshed has worsened markedly in the past two months although neither side has been able to gain a distinct advantage, with government forces relying heavily on air power and artillery to batter the rebels.

Combat has been reported nationwide but the crucial strategic battles are being fought in an arc through western Syria, where most of the population lives.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu met U.N. special envoy Lakhdar Brahimi, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle and Libya's wartime rebel Prime Minister Mahmoud Jibril to discuss Syria on the sidelines of the Istanbul conference.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said this week Brahimi would visit Syria soon to try to persuade Assad to call an immediate ceasefire.

The Syrian government dispatched warplanes to attack insurgent forces surrounding the Wadi-al-Dayf military barracks near Maarat al-Numan in Idlib province, wounding 22 rebels, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The rebels captured Maarat al-Numan this week, cutting the main north-south highway linking Damascus, Homs and Aleppo, and government forces will need to retake it in order to reinforce and resupply Aleppo - Syria's largest city and commercial hub.

MEMORIES OF SREBRENICA

The U.N. Security Council, divided between Western powers on one side and Russia and China on the other, has proved helpless in halting a conflict which has spiraled into civil war and killed more than 30,000 people.

Erdogan said a system which allowed one or two nations to block intervention in such a grave humanitarian crisis was inherently unjust, and that Syria would go down in history as a U.N. failure much like Bosnia in the 1990s.

"How sad is that the United Nations is as helpless today as it was 20 years ago when it watched the massacre of hundreds of thousands of people in the Balkans, Bosnia and Srebrenica," Erdogan told the Istanbul conference.

The July 1995 massacre in Srebrenica was the worst on European soil since World War Two, in which Dutch U.N. peacekeepers abandoned what had been designated a U.N. safe haven to advancing Bosnian Serb forces, who then killed 8,000 Muslim men and boys and bulldozed their corpses into pits.

Turkish officials had expressed hope they might be able to persuade Moscow, which sold Syria $1 billion of arms last year, to soften its opposition at the Security Council and that if it succeeded, China would follow suit.

But relations between Ankara and Moscow sank to a new low on Wednesday after Turkey forced down a passenger jet flying from Moscow and publicly accused Russia of ferrying military equipment to Assad's forces.

Russia has said there were no weapons on the plane and that it was carrying a legal shipment of radar equipment.

Syria is banning Turkish civilian flights over its territory as of midnight on Saturday, according to a Syrian Foreign Ministry statement carried by state news agency SANA.

REBELS CONTROL BORDER TOWN, FOR NOW

Elsewhere on Syria's battlefronts on Saturday, government forces rained mortar fire down on the opposition-held Khalidiya neighborhood of the city of Homs, the Observatory said. Explosions were felt throughout the besieged district.

To the south of Damascus near Deraa - cradle of the uprising which began with peaceful street rallies - Assad's troops and rebels were fighting on the edge of the town of Maarba.

After four days of heavy fighting in the town of Azmarin on the Turkish border, the rebels appeared to have a fragile hold.

"Praise be the town is now in our hands ... We have raised two flags inside the town and the battles are over. Azmarin is completely under our control," one resident, who did not want to be named, told Reuters by telephone from inside the town.

But a few km (miles) along the border clashes continued in the Syrian town of Darkush, where the crack of gunfire and sporadic sound of shelling could be heard from Turkey.

In a preliminary death toll across the country for Friday alone, the Observatory listed about 160 dead. Among them were a 3-year-old child killed in a bombardment of old Aleppo, a district whose ancient buildings have been severely damaged.

Tensions between Ankara and Damascus have also worsened. Turkey scrambled two fighter jets on Friday after a Syrian helicopter bombed Azmarin and has warned of a more forceful response if violence continue to spill over the border after a shell from Syria killed five Turkish civilians 10 days ago.

"If similar border violations occur again, and we feel that Turkey's national security is under threat, we will retaliate without hesitation," Davutoglu said.

Syria's state news agency SANA said Damascus was ready to accept a Russian proposal for a Syrian-Turkish joint security committee to try to contain the border violence. There was no confirmation of this from the Turkish side.

Online Plea To Be Mainstreamed

Teen?s Online Plea To Be Mainstreamed Strikes A Chord
By Michelle Diament

October 12, 2012 Text Size??A??A

A 13-year-old with autism has taken to social media to persuade his school district that he ought to attend his local middle school rather than a segregated program for those with disabilities.

Henry Frost, who communicates using an iPad, has garnered thousands of supporters on Facebook and more than 2,300 signatures through an online petition asking his Tampa, Fla.-area school district to allow him to be mainstreamed at his neighborhood school.

Disabilities and special education experts say it?s a common dispute: A family and a school district disagree about what school is best for the student.

School officials say they work hard to give thousands of students with disabilities and their parents what they want. But sometimes parents don?t get the final decision and school officials do.

While he tries to win admission to Wilson, Frost is taking courses at home online. His family worries he is falling behind his classmates. Frost says he just wants to prove himself in a general education classroom.

?Please see me as a person like you,? he types, triggering the mechanical voice of his iPad. ?I would like the chance to try.?

A Florida Department of Education memo says it?s up to a school district to prove why a student shouldn?t attend a general education classroom.

But Siegel says districts often require that parents prove their child can handle the work. School districts know the process and the law better. Parents can find it difficult to oppose their team of experts.

OBAMA CAN COME BACK AFTER FIRST DEBATE DEBACLE, Says Democratic Strategist Robert Weiner in Washington Times Column

WASHINGTON, Oct. 13, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --?"President Obama can come back after the first debate debacle," says national Democratic strategist and former Clinton White House spokesman Robert Weiner in a Washington Times oped column just out.

Weiner states, "President Obama's inexplicable silence in the first debate has led to a large bump for Mitt Romney ? now slightly ahead according to the Pew poll -- and the game-changer Democrats were convinced would not happen. The Saturday Night Live parodies were predictable?Obama mute against Romney's assertions, Obama becoming the Eastwood empty chair. For all my love of the President, it was bad, really bad."

Weiner says that his wife and coincidentally happened to stay at the Westin Lake Las Vegas around Obama's three-night debate prep stay.? They were organizing an event in neighboring Las Vegas and wanted the away-from-it lake and mountain scenery the hotel offered, so they stayed there before and after their event.

"We could not resist asking hotel staffers what they thought of the President," Weiner says. "Very nice guy," said a hotel security staffer. Without prompting, the hotel staff member added, "We relaxed him too much."? Another hotel staffer, a bellman, said, again with no prompting, "We hope it wasn't the hotel's fault."? That's how obvious the poor performance was.

Weiner contends the performance may also have been attributable to the President's choice of debate stand-in. Weiner asserts, "If Obama wanted to learn how to win a debate, not just expound policy, he needed someone like James Carville or Paul Begala as his debate stand-in opponent, rather than Kerry, who is renowned for long, long sentences. The President learned too well. ?If he preferred to practice against an elected official, he could have gone against Governor Brian Schweitzer of Montana, who wowed the last two Democratic conventions with punchy, pithy points."

Weiner says that "President Obama let Romney get away with everything.? He should have countered 'trickle down government' with 'Trickle-down economics hasn't worked since Hoover' (and should actually have used something like that first before Romney stole the 'trickle down' line and said 'government')."?

"When Romney compared the $5 Trillion tax cuts assertion to 'my five boys saying something that's not always true but just keep repeating it and ultimately hoping I'll believe it,' it was a perfect opening for the President to retort, 'But you have proposed a 20% across-the board tax cut.? You can't have a family, or America, headed by a magician who miraculously pulls a rabbit out of a hat -- money does not grow on the trees of rich tax cuts.? When you refuse to say where you will get the deductions and loopholes to pay for your cut, the American people recognize blue smoke and mirrors and want real answers, not a secret plan that can make them bankrupt.? Mitt, how much would you cut deductions for home mortgages, or charities, or health benefits that Americans need and which help our economy?and don't say 'tell you later'?'"

Likewise, says Weiner, "On Social Security, it was inexcusable for the President to say 'we think alike' instead of 'Republicans have been pressing for privatization for years.' As for the Medicare $716 billion cut, it was amazing the President did not point out that his cut was against insurance company overcharging and the money went to seniors' drug 'doughnut hole' coverage and adding years to Medicare's solvency, whereas the Republicans voted to cut actual benefits."

Weiner believes that "if Obama had a few good lines like that, it would have been an even performance, given that Romney was masterful on rhetoric."?

Weiner says that "With two more debates, Obama can and will come back? if he revamps his attack. Vice President Joe Biden's performance against GOP challenger Paul Ryan will not count anywhere near as much as Obama's own."

He concludes, "In 2000, Al Gore won the first debate by 15 points and lost the next two and the election (aside from Florida).? Now, the jobs picture is improving, bin Laden is dead, and Americans overwhelmingly support leaving Iraq and Afghanistan.? So President Obama and the Democrats still have some cards -- if they learn how to play them."

Kaka scores on return for six-goal Brazil

(Reuters) - Kaka scored on his Brazil comeback after a two-year absence and Oscar notched a brace as the 2014 World Cup hosts demolished Iraq 6-0 in a one-sided friendly in Sweden on Thursday.

Chelsea midfielder Oscar set the South Americans on their way to an easy win in Malmo with two goals in a five-minute spell midway through the first half against opponents who are coached by former Brazil captain Zico.

Real Madrid's Kaka, who last played for his country at the 2010 World Cup, added the third early in the second half before Hulk, Neymar and Lucas shared three more goals as Brazil's incisive passing sliced through the Iraq defence.

Iraq goalkeeper Noor Sabri prevented Brazil from inflicting further embarrassment with an inspired performance.

Iraq, unable to play at home for security reasons, face Australia in a World Cup qualifier in neutral Doha on Tuesday and Zico was unhappy at the timing and venue of the Brazil match.

"We left Qatar where it was 35 Celsius, travelled for 10 hours to a place where it's five Celsius and we have to go back again afterwards," he told Brazilian media before the match. "It wasn't the right moment."

"I wanted to play Wales and they gave me Brazil."

Brazil broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute when Neymar carried the ball forward and set up Oscar, who slotted it past the oncoming Sabri. Five minutes later, Kaka pulled the ball back from the byline and Oscar turned it in from close range for the second.

Sabri then denied David Luiz, Neymar and Kaka in quick succession and Paulinho headed against the underside of the crossbar, leaving Iraq grateful to be only two goals behind at halftime.

Three minutes after the break, Kaka burst down the left, slipped past a defender and fired the ball into the roof of the net from a narrow angle.

Sabri made two more saves before Hulk scored the fourth in the 55th minute, cutting inside his marker and firing a low shot into the bottom far corner.

Neymar scored the fifth with a curling shot in the 75th minute and then played a one-two with Lucas who completed the rout.

Five-times world champions Brazil face Japan in another friendly on Tuesday in the Polish city of Wroclaw.

Iran are fourth out of five teams in Asian qualifying Group B after taking two points from three games.

Qatar FM calls on UN to back Syria rebels

TOKYO (AP) ? The United Nations should move quickly to assist rebel forces in Syria with arms and funding, and should support a no-fly zone to protect civilians caught in the middle of the country's escalating civil war, Qatar's foreign minister said in an interview Friday.

Khalid Bin Mohammad al-Attiyah said Qatar is providing rebels fighting Syrian President Bashar Assad's forces with food, medicine and clothes. But he denied reports his country is funneling arms to the rebels, and said getting them the heavy arms they need to fight Assad's well-equipped military would require unity from the international community that has not yet materialized.

"If we leave Syria further, we will aggravate the situation more and more," he said. "Fanatics will emerge. ... We should not leave it until a stage where, God forbid, somebody calls for jihad, and then we cannot stop people coming from all directions."

Qatar and Saudi Arabia have led Arab calls for an international effort to arm and assist the rebels. Both are key regional players and are believed to have channels through which they could funnel weapons to the rebels. But al-Attiyah said Qatar is not doing so, directly or indirectly.

"This we cannot do unless we have the blessing of the United Nations or our allies ? the U.S.A. or European allies," he said in an interview with The Associated Press during a visit to Tokyo on Friday.

Unified support from the international community has been elusive because fears that more arms thrown into the mix could push Assad to launch even more desperate attacks against his people, or that the weapons could fall into the hands of terrorists. Further, U.N. Security Council members Russia and China oppose intervention, while the United States has been cautious to take risks ahead of next month's presidential election.

Al-Attiyah said that while the rebel forces remain fractious ? his country is set to host a meeting of the Syrian National Council opposition leaders next week ? there is enough intelligence to determine which groups should be bolstered.

"I think if the international community, led by the United States, decided that they will supply means of self-defense to the Syrian people, I think with their advanced intelligence, they know who is who by now," he said.

To further protect Syrian civilians, al-Attiyah said, Qatar supports the creation of a buffer or no-fly zone, another idea that has stalled because of fears that the foreign countries called on to enforce it could be drawn into a broader war that would add to regional instability.

In the meantime, he said, arms are already flowing into Syria to prop up Assad.

On Thursday, Turkey said a Syrian passenger jet it forced to land en route from Moscow to Damascus was carrying Russian ammunition and military equipment destined for the Syrian Defense Ministry.

Russia and Syria deny anything illegal was aboard the Airbus A320 intercepted over Turkish airspace late Wednesday.

"The whole world sees who is supplying Syria with weapons," al-Attiyah said.

Body found in hunt for schoolgirl 'not intact'

Barry Gutierrez / AP

Police search near the 9800 block of Alkire St. on the west side of Stanley Lake in Arvada, Colo., on Thursday. Police are not saying whether a body found in Pattridge Park on Wednesday is linked to the disappearance of 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

A body found in Arvada, Colo., during the search for missing schoolgirl Jessica Ridgeway is "not intact," delaying the official identification of the remains, police said Thursday.

AP

Jessica Ridgeway disappeared while making the short walk to school Friday.

Westminster Police spokesman Trevor Materasso said police have not tied the discovery of the body to the search for the missing girl, however, they hope to have a positive ID on the body by Friday.

The body was removed from Pattridge Park in Arvada -- an area dotted with abandoned coal mines about five miles southwest of Westminster -- by police just before 9 p.m. Wednesday (11 p.m. ET).

Authorities said Wednesday that they believed Jessica, a fifth-grader with blond hair and glasses who loves math and gym class, had been abducted. She disappeared Friday on what should have been a short walk to school in Westminster.

In their search for Jessica, police have dismissed any connection to several related cases.?

In one, police in Portsmouth, N.H., said there was no link between an abandoned car with a Colorado license plate found at a Walmart and the investigation into Jessica?s disappearance. Instead, police said the car belongs to a woman who recently moved from Colorado to New Hampshire, and she parked at the Walmart because she doesn?t have parking at her home.

In another, police said they were investigating whether Jessica?s case might be related to that of another girl who was abducted for several hours Monday in Cody, Wyo.

Police explore link between missing Colorado girl and Wyoming abduction

Police discover human remains during a search for a missing Colorado girl. NBC's Jay Gray reports.

In that case, a man lured the 11-year-old girl into a sport utility vehicle, saying he needed help finding his puppy. The girl was released four hours later and was discovered by hunters. Police there are looking for a white man, between 55 and 60 years old, with short, strawberry-blond or white hair and a neatly trimmed mustache.

Westminster police spokeswoman Karlyn Tilley noted there is "no specific connection" between Jessica's disappearance and the Wyoming case. "It's just like everything else they're looking at," Tilley said Wednesday. "They just don't want to leave any stone unturned."

Adding to the mystery was a reported sighting more than 2,000 miles away in Dexter, Maine.

A woman reported seeing a girl who looked like Jessica on Sunday, in a blue Buick station wagon with Colorado plates. Authorities issued a statewide alert for officers to stop any blue Buick station wagons with Colorado plates, Dexter police Sgt. Alan Grinnell said.

Citizens also have passed on tips from Maryland, Texas and Nevada, Materasso said.

In Colorado, the parents of a missing 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway open up for the first time since their daughter disappeared on her way to school. They vow to "never stop looking." NBC's Miguel Almaguer reports.

Police release new photos, video in search for missing Colorado girl

Backpack, water bottle found
Police in the Denver suburb of Westminster repeatedly have urged the public to study the details of Jessica?s face in a photo ? a small, gap-toothed grin, a slight bruise on her nose ? and a short home video, in hopes they may have seen something or come across the girl.

The only real clue police have revealed is the discovery over the weekend of a backpack and water bottle that Jessica had with her when she disappeared.

The items were found in the town of Superior, some six miles from her home. Police won't discuss what was found in the bag or testing results on it.

The search for Jessica went national, thanks in part to social media and a Facebook page set up to help find the girl.

"Do your good deed of the day and retweet Jessica's photo," hundreds of Tweets urged Wednesday.

Kathryn Scott Osler / The Denver Post via AP

After giving the interview, Jessica's mother Sarah Ridgeway and father, Jeremiah Bryant, embrace at the Westminster Police Department Tuesday.
