Still hot! Western heat wave takes its toll (+video)

The heat wave hammering much of the US West is setting records and taking its toll as air conditioners work overtime. Brush fires are a concern with Fourth of July fireworks for sale.

As expected, the heat wave ranging from southern Arizona west and north to Sacramento, Boise, and Seattle has first responders working overtime, water slides and public swimming pools crowded, and zookeepers hosing down the elephants and feeding frozen trout to the tigers.

The blistering heat appears to have caused at least one death so far: an elderly man living without air condition in Las Vegas, where temperatures were expected to reach 116.

At least seven people have been found dead in the last week in Arizona, likely tied to the brutal desert heat. Personnel were added to the Border Patrol search-and-rescue unit because of the danger to people trying to slip across the Mexican border, officials reported.

Temperatures hit 127 in Death Valley, Calif., Saturday and were expected to reach at least that high again Sunday. (The record there ? the highest ever recorded on Earth ? is 134 degrees, set in 1913.) At Furnace Creek, in Death Valley National Park, nighttime lows only dip down to the mid-90s.

Overnight temperatures remained high inland from the Pacific in California because cooling ocean breezes hadn?t wafted as far east as usual.

"We have more work than we can handle," Max Ghaly of Cathedral City Air Conditioning and Heating in Palm Springs, Calif., told CNN. "We're running all over the place trying to do what we can."

US Airways canceled 18 flights Saturday when the temperature in Phoenix inched past the 118-degree maximum for take-off.

In Northern California, record-breaking temperatures were recorded in Sacramento, where the high was 107 degrees; Marysville reached 109 degrees; and Stockton saw 106 degrees.

Cooling stations were set up to shelter the homeless and elderly people who can't afford to run their air conditioners. In Phoenix, Joe Arpaio, the famously hard-nosed sheriff who runs a tent jail, planned to distribute ice cream and cold towels to inmates this weekend.

Brush fires are a particular concern to firefighters ? more so now because Fourth of July fireworks have gone on sale in many places.

Officials said the extreme heat will continue until at least Tuesday.

"It's early in the heat season. Usually our hottest months are August and September. We're not even in July yet, but this is a massive high-pressure system and it's just smothering," Bill Patzert, a climatologist at the?NASA?Jet Propulsion Laboratory?in La Ca?ada Flintridge told the Los Angeles Times.

Some saw the heat wave as an opportunity to notch personal records.

Dan Kail was vacationing in Las Vegas from Pittsburgh when he heard that the temperature at Death Valley could approach 130 degrees this weekend. He didn?t hesitate to make a trip to the desert location that is typically the hottest place on the planet.

?Coming to Death Valley in the summertime has always been on the top of my bucket list,? he said. ?When I found out it might set a record I rented a car and drove straight over. If it goes above 130 I will have something to brag about.?

Kerry: Progress made in peace talks

Oh, Franco, Franco, Franco. Just when we thought we'd found something to commend you for, you go?and do this. Yes, it was merely a week ago that we were surprised to find ourselves praising The Franco for his actually noble effort to crowd-source $500,000 for a three-film project. But now he's up and bailed on another auteur project, on which $500,000 had already been spent.

'Anna Nicole' Movie Reviews ? Does Lifetime Film Live Up To Real ...

Anna Nicole Movie Reviews

Courtesy of Lifetime

Lifetime was at it again on June 29, premiering their latest based-on-real-life movie with the tragic story of the troubled star, Anna Nicole Smith. The source material was high drama to begin with ? so did the TV flick live up to the real story?

Say what you want about Lifetime, but they found their groove and they?re sticking to it.?Anna Nicole, which premiered on June 29, is just the most recent installment of the camp-y, overly dramatic made-for-TV movies that Lifetime does so well. We at?HollywoodLife.com?called Lifetime?s story of?Anna Nicole Smith ?crazy, wild fun? and a ?roller coaster ride of drugs, alcohol, and tragedy,? but did the rest of the critics like it as much as we did?

?Anna Nicole? Reviews

Variety

Anna Nicole?isn?t really about anything in the conventional sense, but still manages to be as hard to turn away from and vaguely sleazy as its namesake, which should suit Lifetime?s purposes just fine. If nothing else, the movie appears destined to win some kind of award for most convincing prosthetic cleavage, allowing Agnes Bruckner to play the Playboy and Guess jeans model in her pre- and ?build-on? breast stages, flanked by a perfectly cast Martin Landau and Adam Goldberg as the unlikely men in her life. As guilty pleasures go, this one certainly doesn?t lack for moments at which to hoot.

New York Post

On Saturday night, Lifetime blows out the doors with Anna Nicole, a true-life movie so good, so well-written and yet sleazy enough to satisfy even the cheesiest viewers among us.

The Hollywood Reporter

It was in 2007 that?Anna Nicole Smith, aka Vickie Lynn Hogan, the small-town Texas girl who grew up to embody one of the most spectacularly unfortunate public meltdowns of modern Hollywood, died from a cocktail of prescription drugs at the age of 39. That rags-to-riches story is an old Hollywood fable continuously reflected in a constant rotation of bright young things. But?Anna Nicole?manages to breathe new life into the tale of yet another young woman with a misplaced?Marilyn Monroe?obsession that turns into a curse.

Boston Globe

The movie, which premieres on Saturday at 8, has nothing to offer. It?s storytelling at its most shallow and unsatisfying. Written by John Rice and Joe Batteer and directed by Mary Harron, Anna Nicole barely conveys the basic facts of Smith?s life, never mind any bigger ideas about her private terrors and our cultural demons. Bruckner is fine as Smith, and her prosthetic breastplate is quite impressive; but the script gives her nothing of substance or with resonance.

So besides one scathing review, everyone seems to be on board with us! We hope you set your DVRs to record?Anna Nicole?or that you can catch a rerun, because it?s definitely worth a viewing.

HollywoodLifers, did you see?Anna Nicole? What did you think? Let us know!

(AP) ? Current and former top U.S. officials are supporting the government's collection of phone and Internet data following new revelations about the secret surveillance programs aimed at disrupting terrorist plots.

In interviews on Sunday news programs, guests ranging from White House chief of staff Denis McDonough to former Vice President Dick Cheney and former CIA and National Security Agency head Michael Hayden defended the government's reliance on data collection from Americans.

The latest comments came as the Washington Post reports that the government runs four major data collection programs ? two aimed at phone and Internet metadata and two more targeting contents of phone and Web communication.

The metadata pulled in by the secret programs does not contain communication contents but includes phone and Internet contacts and location information.

Detroit Tigers Beat Minnesota Twins 4-0, Fueled By Prince Fielder And Rick Porcello

MINNEAPOLIS -- Rick Porcello kept up the starting pitching surge Detroit has been riding all season.

Prince Fielder came through with another clutch hit, and Jose Valverde even had a stress-free appearance to try to get back on track. This is the way the Tigers wanted to start the series in Minnesota.

Fielder broke open a scoreless game with a two-run double in the sixth inning, the spark that Porcello and the Tigers used to beat the Twins 4-0 on Friday night.

Despite his status as the afterthought of this stacked rotation behind Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer, Anibal Sanchez and Doug Fister, Porcello has shined in his last four appearances. He is 2-1 with 30 strikeouts in 27 innings and just 15 hits, five runs and four walks against him during that stretch.

"I've honestly really felt confident all year," Porcello said. "I like what I've been working on, especially in the offseason going into spring training, and I'm starting to get some good results from it now."

Victor Martinez and Jhonny Peralta followed Fielder's soaring drive with RBI doubles of their own, ending the night for Twins starter Scott Diamond (4-6). Even better for the Tigers was that the four-run cushion kept sputtering closer Jose Valverde out of a pressurized save situation.

"He wanted to be back out there tonight, and he wasn't shy about it," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said.

Porcello (4-3) didn't need much relief. The right-hander breezed through seven scoreless innings, allowing just two singles and one double without a walk. He struck out five and gave the Tigers their 19th quality start (of at least six innings and three runs or less) in the last 20 games.

"Porcello was unbelievable. The last couple starts, he's been doing great. The breaking ball and two-seamer he's throwing, it's awesome," Valverde said.

Diamond walked Austin Jackson, the leadoff man back in his familiar spot after he missed the last month because of a pulled left hamstring, with one out in that decisive sixth. Torii Hunter advanced Jackson with a groundout, and Miguel Cabrera was intentionally walked.

"Diamond matched him for a long time there," said Twins manager Ron Gardenhire, lamenting the leadoff walk: "He got some balls up after that."

Fielder made the Twins pay.

"He's done a terrific job of picking us up in that situation when it's happened. Terrific job. Tonight, off a left-hander, that's really special," Leyland said.

With one of those huge upper-cut swings, he smacked a 2-0 curveball high off the towering right-field wall to put the Tigers in front. Cabrera ran through the stop sign by third base coach Tom Brookens, whose arms were still straight up in the air as the big slugger chugged home without a throw.

"We're a team that slugs it pretty good, and when we slug it pretty good we look pretty good," Leyland said.

Valverde came in for the ninth after Drew Smyly and Joaquin Benoit collaborated on a scoreless eighth. Valverde walked Joe Mauer to start the inning, but Ryan Doumit followed with a double-play ground ball. Josh Willingham was grazed by a pitch, but Justin Morneau struck out looking to end the game.

"It's great for me and great for my teammates to be on the mound and have my confidence again," said Valverde, who allowed 10 hits, seven runs and five homers over his last six appearances while blowing two of his five save opportunities.

Valverde gave up a tying, two-run homer to Kansas City's Lorenzo Cain with two outs in the ninth inning on Wednesday, a game the Tigers lost in the 10th. Detroit's bullpen, the one glaring area of concern on this otherwise-championship-caliber club, has a 4-12 record with eight squandered saves in 22 chances.

Leyland bristled at a question about whether Valverde was still the closer, angrily lacing his answer with expletives before eventually affirming the veteran right-hander's status.

"We're going to use Jose Valverde until we decide Jose Valverde can or can't do it or we've got somebody else better," Leyland said.

The skipper tried to suggest too much attention has been fixated on his relievers, noting the Tigers have had some recent trouble scoring. While losing two of three to the Royals they had seven runs in 28 innings. But the Tigers still have the best batting average in baseball, at .281 entering the night.

Diamond, who was replaced with two outs in the sixth, gave up five hits and two walks with just one strikeout. The six scoreless innings he pitched on June 2 fueled his lone victory of the last seven turns. That is also the only time in that span he finished six innings.

NOTES: Valverde was warming up on the field before the game, working on the split-fingered fastball that has been hit hard lately. ... Willingham, the regular in left field, was the DH for the Twins for the fourth straight time to rest his sore knees as much as possible. ... Sanchez (6-5, 2.65 ERA) will pitch for the Tigers on Saturday against RH Samuel Deduno (2-1, 3.47 ERA) of the Twins. Sanchez took a no-hitter one out into the ninth inning the last time he faced the Twins, in Detroit on May 24. He sat out his previous start because of tightness in his shoulder.
