Yet Another Case of "Think Before You Tweet" ? NASCAR Driver Disgusts Breastfeeding Advocates With Twitter Rant

Photo: EraPhernalia Vintage/Creative Commons

Breasts. We see them everywhere, nowadays. Television, movies, magazines ? they're pretty much impossible to miss, even if you try really hard. NASCAR driver Kasey Kahne is probably a fan himself, but he managed to find at least one set to be offensive enough to turn 'em into a personal PR nightmare.

Kahne infuriated the nursing-friendly masses when he tweeted his uncensored opinion regarding a mother breastfeeding her son at a grocery store. Apparently, "One boob put away one boob hanging" was so offensive to him that he felt it warranted international publicity. After referencing the incident as "nasty," he claimed that he no longer felt like shopping or eating after witnessing the public display of nudity. The Twitter debacle escalated when one of Kahne's followers begged to differ with his opinion (using some mild profanity), to which he responded with more profanity. As you can imagine, nursing advocates and people in general are angry about his attitude and the way he handled himself on Twitter.

So, here's what I don't understand about this situation (aside from the disgustingly rude commentary): guys are supposed to like boobs, right? It seems to me that spotting one out in public would count as a freebie, of sorts. I'm not saying that this woman couldn't have benefited from the use of a nice nursing cover, but I find it hard to believe that it's any more offensive to witness a mother breastfeeding her child than it is to see the backsides of people who can't be bothered to wear belts or pants that fit (I saw at least four today in public places).

It remains to be seen how Kahne's reputation will be affected by this rant, if at all. There are certainly plenty of people who agree with his point of view, even if it was expressed in a tactless manner. He has already issued a formal apology, of course, which was clearly written by a seasoned publicist if the correct use of grammar and punctuation are indicators.

So how do you feel about public breastfeeding? Do you think that Kahne's comments were justified, or did you find his views to be majorly offensive?

2013 Ford Fusion to debut Lane Keeping System at 2012 NAIAS

Ford is offering the Lane Keeping System (LKS) in its 2013 Fusion, which will be unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in January. The Fusion will be the first mainstream midsize sedan in North America installed with this system. Ford will also be mounting the LKS on its 2012 Explorer. The carmaker plans to install the LKS on its vehicles over the next few years.

The LKS utilizes a mounted camera on the vehicles? windshield to watch the road and detect an unintentional lane departure. The driver must turn on the Lane Keeping System. The system will be enabled once the vehicle reaches a speed of 40 mph and lane markers are noticeable on the road. A lighted green icon ? a car inside two lanes, indicates that the LKS is on.

The LKS uses electric power-assisted steering (EPAS) to give a vibrating alert to the driver. If the driver does not respond to the alert, the EPAS will steer the car back into the lane.? When the LKS detects the car is nearing the edge of the lane without an activated turn signal, the lane marker in the icon turns yellow and the steering wheel vibrates like hitting strips.

If the driver does not respond to the alert, the icon turns red and EPAS will nudge the vehicle back to the center of the lane. If the vehicle still drifts, EPAS will add vibration to the nudging. The EPAS will turn off once the drive turns the steering wheel, hit the brakes or the accelerator. The LKS offers three levels of assistance depending on the situation: Lane Keeping Alert, Lane Keeping Aid and Driver Alert.

GOP campaign showcases role of federal judiciary

WASHINGTON ? Newt Gingrich's recent attack against federal judges has prompted an ample backlash, even from fellow conservatives. Yet they offer a reminder of how often candidates attack the courts and showcase the stakes for the judiciary in who wins the White House next November.

In his first three years, President Obama has appointed two Supreme Court justices, 25 federal appeals court judges and 99 district court judges. All serve for limitless terms.

Whoever is sworn in as president in January 2013 could leave a similar legacy for the law of the land. At the Supreme Court, three justices will turn 80 during the next administration and possibly consider stepping down: Ruth Bader Ginsburg, now 78, and Antonin Scalia and Anthony Kennedy, both now 75.

At the district and circuit court level ? the first two rungs of the federal judiciary ? key vacancies will likely await whoever is elected. On the 11-member U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, which resolves challenges to federal regulations, three vacancies already exist and are not expected to be filled soon. Nationwide, the federal bench consists of 874 lifetime appointees.

"More and more, our country's disputes, on the environment, on labor, on criminal law, are being decided by federal judges," says University of Utah law professor Paul Cassell, a former district court judge. "We're looking to courts to sort out issues like health care."

Federal judges appointed by the president during the first three years in office:

Bill Cinton

? Number of Supreme Court justices: 2

? Number of appeals court judges: 28

? Number of district court judges: 152

George W. Bush

? Number of Supreme Court justices: 0

? Number of appeals court judges: 30

? Number of district court judges: 138 .

Barack Obama

? Number of Supreme Court justices: 2

? Number of appeals court justices: 25

? Number of district court justices: 99

Source: Senate Judiciary Committee records

Georgetown University law professor Susan Low Bloch agrees. "The legacy for the president can be huge, given how many controversial issues reach the courts." she says. "Health care, immigration, abortion, affirmative action and voting rights ? all of these are very important and tend to divide the nation."

Yet, the judiciary ? unlike the economy, which people understand as affecting their lives ? rarely dominates the discussion in a presidential campaign.

Gingrich's remarks in recent debates, interviews and documents on his campaign website have put a spotlight on federal judges. Declaring that the judiciary has turned "grotesquely dictatorial," he proposes having judges who issue unpopular decisions picked up by U.S. marshals and made to account to Congress and the executive branch for their rulings.

"If the president and the Congress say the court is wrong, in the end the court would lose," Gingrich said on CBS News' Face the Nation on Dec. 18.

Many Republicans, including former attorney general Michael Mukasey, an appointee of George W. Bush and a former district court judge, have denounced Gingrich's ideas.

His chief rival for the GOP presidential nomination, Mitt Romney, criticized Gingrich's view that authorities could be sent after judges. "The solution to judges out of control is not to tear up the Constitution and say that the Congress of the United States becomes the now ultimate power in this country," Romney said on Fox News last week. "In the Constitution, there is a method for removing a justice. There's also a method for reversing their decisions."

Judges can be removed from office through the impeachment process, which requires a majority vote by the House of Representatives to impeach and a two-thirds vote for conviction by the Senate on any article of impeachment from the House.

For as long as the United States has had politicians and judges, politicians have complained about judges, particularly in election years. One of the most notorious episodes was Democratic President Franklin D. Roosevelt's attempt to "pack" the court in 1937 after a series of rulings blocking his New Deal initiatives. Roosevelt proposed the appointment of a new justice for every member of the court that was over 70; six of the nine members were over 70 at the time. The court-packing plan died in Congress.

In the modern era, GOP presidential candidate Bob Dole in 1996 decried "activist" judges and targeted U.S. District Court Judge Harold Baer of New York, because of a decision disallowing evidence in a drug trial.

Dole, who lost to incumbent President Clinton, failed to generate much public attention regarding the judiciary. Yet he did draw criticism in Washington, including from conservative jurists. Chief Justice William Rehnquist, a lifelong Republican, said in a speech at the time one of the "essentials" to the functioning of the federal courts was "the independence of the judges who sit on these courts."

Gingrich has gone much further than Dole or any other political candidate in contemporary campaigns.

Cassell, an appointee of George W. Bush in 2002 who left the bench to teach in 2007, is among the conservatives who bristle at Gingrich's views. Cassell likened Gingrich's approach to "a nuclear missile" challenging the "lifetime guarantees that are part of our Constitution."

Bloch added: "It's so over-the-top that it makes a mockery of judicial independence."

Prairie floods, Slave Lake fires and Goderich Tornado top list of 2011's extreme weather

Dec 22, 2011 ? 3:24 PM ET | Last Updated: Dec 22, 2011 3:32 PM ET

By Linda Nguyen

TORONTO ? The historic spring and summer flooding in the Prairies was the biggest weather story this year, according to Environment Canada.

The massive widespread flooding in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and parts of northern Ontario began after a ?weather bomb? in the winter and resulted in surging waters on six large rivers well into July.

According to the weather agency, the floods were the second costliest weather event in Canadian history, following the 1998 ice storm which toppled trees and caused major outages throughout eastern Canada.

As a result, both Lake Manitoba and the Assiniboine River reported water levels not seen in hundreds of years. The Canadian Armed Forces, and even penitentiary inmates, were relied on throughout this period to help lay down sandbags along the riverbanks.

?It was by all accounts, the big story of the year,? said senior climatologist David Phillips, who on Thursday unveiled Environment Canada?s 16th annual Top 10 Weather List. ?We use that expression, the flood of the century but hey this could?ve been the flood of the millennium. The flood of all times for sure.?

Phillips said the damage costs topped more than $1 billion.

The weather list is determined by a number of factors including the impact, economic fallout, the area covered and the longevity of the weather event.

It was derived from a list of 138 events this year, including the current balmy wintry conditions many Canadians are currently facing.

Other weather events that made Environment Canada?s list for 2011, include:

2. Slave Lake Burning

Although now it?s suspected arson started the blaze, the fire in Slave Lake, Alta., would not have been as tragic if the weather conditions had not been perfect. Strong winds of up to 100 km/h helped the flames rip through the town, destroying one third of homes and businesses.

3. Richelieu Flooding

In late May, southern Quebec experienced the worst overland flooding in more than a century resulting in hundreds of roads being damaged and thousands of hectares of farmland destroyed.

4. Down on the Farm: Doom to Boom

Farmers across the Prairies were faced with a season of prolonged flooding, which then turned into one of the greatest farming conditions in years.

5. Tornado Goderich in a Wild Week of Weather

Last August, an F3 tornado ripped through Goderich, Ont., causing millions of dollars in damage and killing one person. The tornado was just a precursor of what was to come in the next few days when three other tornadoes blew through Ontario.

6. Good Night, Irene? and Katia, Maria and Ophelia

This year 19 tropical storms formed in the Atlantic Ocean, above the average of 11.

7. Summer: Hummer or Bummer?

In parts of the country this year, such as Quebec and Saskatchewan, temperatures soared with heat and humidity. Those on the West Coast saw summer with ?endless rain and overcast or foggy skies.? Even Toronto didn?t see its average number of sticky smog days.

8. Arctic Sea Ice near record low

It was on the list last year and makes an appearance again this year. Environment Canada says the sea ice covering the Artic Ocean plummeted to its second-lowest level on record in September.

9. Groundhog Day Storm: Snowmaggeddon or Snowbigdeal?

In late January, meterologists predicted a severe winter storm would wallop up to 100 million people from New Mexico to Newfoundland. When it finally arrived, most parts of the country only saw 10 cm of snow. The major part of the system struck the U.S.

10. Wicked Winds from the West

Records winds, some as strong as 150 km/h, ripped through southern Alberta in November. The property damage, which is still being tabulated, was estimated in the millions.

Deportation could split up lesbian Vt. couple (AP)

MONTPELIER, Vt. ? Frances Herbert and her wife, Takako Ueda, were looking forward to the New Year's Eve family concert at the Baptist Church, the town fireworks on the pond and then a night at home to celebrate the arrival of 2012.

But federal immigration authorities have told Ueda she needs to leave the United States for her native Japan by Dec. 31, a move that would split up a couple who have been together more than a decade and were married under Vermont law in April.

Their relatively rare case illuminates the difficulties that binational gay couples face at a time when the Obama administration has pledged not to uphold federal marriage law in courts but the rest of the executive branch ? including immigration authorities ? still follows the letter of the law.

Federal immigration authorities demand extensive documentation showing that a binational couple claiming to be married really are: witness statements, property records, utility and other household bills showing both names and the like often are required. Herbert said she and Ueda submitted 600 pages of such evidence with their application.

"It's despicable," Herbert said. "We had 600 pages of proof, and 599 of them were completely ignored. One line on one page" ? the one that said they were both women ? "is what they paid attention to."

Herbert, a 51-year-old home care provider, and Ueda, a 56-year-old graphic designer, live in the southern Vermont town of Dummerston and got letters Dec. 1 from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, a division of the Department of Homeland Security, telling them that Ueda had to leave the country within 30 days. Ueda's student visa expired in July.

They had applied for "relative alien" status on the basis that she was the spouse of a U.S. citizen, but the federal agency denied that petition.

The letter to Herbert, who had applied to be Ueda's sponsor, said that under the federal Defense of Marriage Act, the 1996 law saying the government would not recognize same-sex marriages, they couldn't be considered spouses. DOMA defines marriage as "only a legal union between one man and one woman as husband and wife."

"Your spouse is not a person of the opposite sex," wrote Robert Cowan, a U.S. CIS official. "Therefore, under the DOMA, your petition must be denied."

Only a handful of states recognize same-sex marriages. Experts say there are not reliable numbers on how many couples find themselves in a similar situation to that of Herbert and Ueda, but it's believed the number is small. Many binational same-sex couples don't seek spousal status for fear of being rejected because of DOMA.

Steve Ralls, spokesman for Immigration Equality, a nonprofit legal aid group that works on immigration and sexual orientation issues, said one San Francisco couple remained together despite getting government notices that one of the men, an Australian, needed to leave the country, while a New Jersey man's partner had been deported to Peru.

President Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder Jr. announced in February that the administration would no longer defend DOMA in court in the cases in which it is being challenged. But until the issue is resolved, executive branch agencies, including those within the Department of Homeland Security, it remains the law of the land.

But Leslie Holmans, second vice president of the American Immigration Lawyers' Association, said that even after getting the types of letters Herbert and Ueda got, some same-sex, binational couples benefit from "prosecutorial discretion" by immigration authorities.

She said many federal prosecutors believe "our systems are so overcrowded that what we really need to be doing is concentrating on people who are a risk to our country. What's happened is that we have seen some same-sex couples go before the immigration court and ask for prosecutorial discretion." Government lawyers often respond by "either dismissing cases or they're not enforcing the notice of deportation."

Holmans said the situation is far from ideal because affected immigrants are left in "legal limbo," still without recognized immigration status and unable to get a job or seek other government benefits.

Scott Titshaw, a professor at Mercer University Law School in Georgia who has practiced immigration law and written articles on DOMA, said Ueda and Herbert most likely shouldn't fear Ueda's imminent arrest but "still have plenty to worry about." He said if Ueda traveled abroad, then she might be barred from re-entering the U.S. With local authorities in some states cracking down on illegal immigrants, Ueda might also want avoid travel to places like Arizona and Alabama, which both have strict immigration laws.

Herbert and Ueda first met as students at Aquinas College in Michigan in 1980 and stayed in touch during the next couple of decades after Ueda returned to Japan and married a man. She said that when Herbert went to visit her in Japan in 1999, she made a big decision. "I had a good marriage, but there was something missing, and that something was Frances." Eight months later, she moved to the United States, and the two had a commitment ceremony in 2000, marrying in 2011.

Both vowed to fight any effort to break them up.

"I'm a really great law obeyer. I grew up in Japan. We follow laws," Ueda said with a laugh. "But I have a very strong feeling, too, that I won't go back to Japan. I don't have a place to live in Japan. My family, my existence, is not there anymore."

Ironing out the details of the Earth's core

ScienceDaily (Dec. 20, 2011) ? Identifying the composition of Earth's core is key to understanding how our planet formed and the current behavior of its interior. While it has been known for many years that iron is the main element in the core, many questions have remained about just how iron behaves under the conditions found deep inside Earth. Now, a team led by mineral-physics researchers at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) has honed in on those behaviors by conducting extremely high-pressure experiments on the element.

"Pinpointing the properties of iron is the gold standard -- or I guess 'iron standard' -- for how the core behaves," says Jennifer Jackson, assistant professor of mineral physics at Caltech and coauthor of the study, which appears in the December 20 issue of Geophysical Research Letters. "That is where most discussions about the deep interior of the Earth begin. The temperature distribution, the formation of the planet -- it all goes back to the core."

To learn more about how iron behaves under the extreme conditions that exist in Earth's core, the team used diamond anvil cells (DAC) to compress tiny samples of the element. The DACs use two small diamonds to squeeze the iron, reproducing the types of pressures felt in Earth's core. These particular samples were pressurized to 171 Gigapascals, which is 1.7 million times the pressure we feel on the surface of Earth.

To complete the experiments, the team took the DACs to the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois, where they were able to use powerful X-rays to measure the vibrational density of states of compressed iron. This information allows the researchers to determine how quickly sound waves move through iron and compare the results to seismic observations of the core.

"The vibrational properties that we were able to measure at extraordinarily high pressures are unprecedented," says Jackson. "These pressures exist in the Earth's outer core, and are very difficult to reproduce experimentally."

Caitlin Murphy, a graduate student in Jackson's group and first author of the paper, says the group was happy to find that their data set on the vibrational properties of iron evolved smoothly over a very wide pressure range, suggesting that their pressure-dependent analysis was robust, and that iron did not encounter any phase changes over this pressure range. To help achieve these successful measurements at high pressures, the group used some innovative techniques to keep the iron from thinning out in the DACs, such as preparing an insert to stabilize the sample chamber during compression. Additionally, they measured the volume of the compressed iron sample in situ and hydrostatically loaded the iron sample with neon into the sample chamber.

"These techniques allowed us to get the very high statistical quality we wanted in a reasonable amount of time, thus allowing us to obtain accurate vibrational properties of compressed iron, such as its Gr?neisen parameter," says Jackson. "The Gr?neisen parameter of a material describes how its total energy changes with compression and informs us on how iron may behave in the Earth's core. It is an extremely difficult quantity to measure accurately."

The team was also able to get a closer estimate of the melting point of iron from their experiments -- which they report to be around 5800 Kelvin at the boundary between Earth's solid inner core and liquid outer core. This information, combined with the other vibrational properties they found, gives the group important clues for estimating the amount of light elements, or impurities, in the core. By comparing the density of iron at the relevant pressure and temperature conditions with seismic observations of the core's density, they found that iron is 5.5 percent more dense than the solid inner core at this boundary.

"With our new data on iron, we can discuss several aspects of the Earth's core with more certainty and narrow down the amount of light elements that may be needed to help power the geodynamo -- the process responsible for maintaining the Earth's magnetic field, which originates in the core," says Jackson.

According to Murphy, the next step is to perform similar experiments alloying iron with nickel and various light elements to determine how the density and, in particular, the vibrational properties of pure iron are affected. In turn, they will be able to evaluate the amount of light elements that produce a closer match to seismic observations of the core.

"There are a few candidate light elements for the core that everyone is always talking about -- sulfur, silicon, oxygen, carbon, and hydrogen, for instance," says Murphy. "Silicon and oxygen are a few of the more popular, but they have not been studied in this great of detail yet. So that's where we will begin to expand our study."

The study was funded by the California Institute of Technology, the National Science Foundation, and the U.S. Department of Energy. Bin Chen, a former postdoctoral scholar in Jackson's lab, and Wolfgang Sturhahn, senior technologist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and visiting associate at Caltech, were also coauthors on the paper.

Christopher Hitchens: Always on the Mark

I scoured the floor below the studio where the staff?s offices were located. I checked the bathrooms on both floors. I asked the make-up artist. No Christopher. Then it hit me; he was probably outside smoking a cigarette. The quickest outdoor access from CNN?s Washington, D.C., bureau was via the other studio, which had an outdoor patio. As I pulled back the curtain, there he was. Not smoking, not drinking, but half-naked playing darts with the camera crew.

Gingrich says rivals' criticism taking a toll (AP)

DES MOINES, Iowa ? Newt Gingrich tried to quiet unrelenting campaign criticism that he acknowledged had taken a toll as Mitt Romney stepped up insider attacks Saturday in hopes of regaining front-runner status with the first presidential vote little more than two weeks away.

Gingrich, the former House speaker enjoying a late surge in the polls, pledged to correct what he said were his rivals' inaccurate claims about him. Romney, the ex-Massachusetts governor looking for a rebound, portrayed Gingrich as a well-heeled lobbyist since his service in Congress and predicted that conservative voters will reject Gingrich as they learn more about his lengthy Washington record.

"I'm going to let the lawyers decide what is and what is not lobbying, but when it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, typically it's a duck," Romney said.

With the Iowa caucuses Jan. 3 up for grabs, most candidates are redoubling their efforts heading into the holidays, when voters generally tune out the race.

Gingrich is their prime target. Last week alone, anti-Gingrich ads from a Romney ally outspent Gingrich by an 8-to-1 margin on television.

Gingrich cited "the extraordinary negativity of the campaign" during a call from Washington with Iowa supporters. He said he was inclined to hold teleconferences every few days so people can discuss ideas and his campaign can "encourage them to raise any of these things that you get in the mail that are junk and dishonest."

"I'll be glad to personally answer, so you're hearing it from my very own lips," he said in the forum. "We don't have our advertising versus their advertising, but you get to ask me directly."

Romney campaigned in early-voting South Carolina, where tea party activists have given Gingrich a strong lead in polls. Romney told reporters that many voters now are just beginning to pay attention to the race and will turn on Gingrich after they learn about his time in Washington and his role with mortgage company Freddie Mac, a quasi-government agency.

Gingrich's consulting firm collected $1.6 million from the company. Gingrich insists he did not lobby for them and only provided advice.

"I think as tea partyers concentrate on that, for instance, they'll say, `Wow, this really isn't the guy that would represent our views,'" Romney said after a town hall meeting with South Carolina Rep. Tim Scott. "Many tea party folks, I believe, are going to find me to be the ideal candidate."

Gingrich said the attacks on his record have been brutal, but he insisted they are exaggerated.

"I just want to set the record straight," Gingrich told his Iowa backers. "We were paid annually for six years, so the numbers you see are six years of work. Most of that money went to pay overhead ? for staff, for other things. It didn't go directly to me. It went to the company that provided consulting advice."

It's a distinction without a difference, his rivals have said. Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann continued to criticize his tenure as a consultant and Texas Rep. Ron Paul continued an ad accusing him of "serial hypocrisy" for taking Freddie Mac's checks.

During a Friday appearance on Jay Leno's late-night television show, Paul also turned on Bachmann.

"She doesn't like Muslim. She hates them," said Paul, who routinely clashes with his rivals over foreign policy. "She wants to go get them."

Bachmann told reporters in Estherville that was not true.

"I don't hate Muslims. I love the American people," she said. "As president of the United States, my goal will be to keep America safe, free and sovereign."

Texas Gov. Rick Perry rumbled through rural Iowa on a bus tour. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum stuck to a plan that has won him the honor of spending the most time in the state, yet has not yet translated into support in polls.

Iowa's largest newspaper, The Des Moines Register, announced it would publish its presidential endorsement in Sunday editions. In 2008, the paper backed Sen. John McCain, the eventual GOP nominee who came up short in Iowa's caucuses.

Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, who early on decided against competing in Iowa, was campaigning in New Hampshire. Huntsman, who also served as President Barack Obama's ambassador to China, has kept his focus on New Hampshire, where independent voters are the largest bloc and can vote in either party's primary.

As the Iowa vote neared, Gingrich's decision to take the weekend off from campaigning raised eyebrows given his rivals' busy schedules. Gingrich called the decision "pacing."

Gingrich has prided himself on a nontraditional campaign, but his advantages in the polls could shift if the only exposure to Gingrich comes through rivals' negative ads.

Gingrich's campaign manager noted the onslaught in a fundraising pitch to donors.

"With Newt's opponents spending $9 million on attack ads in Iowa, we need to quickly ramp up our messaging," Michael Krull said Saturday.

Anti-Gingrich ads, courtesy of Romney allies, dominate in Iowa. The Restore Our Future political action committee on Friday spent an additional $1 million on airtime, and broadcast almost $790,000 in commercials against Gingrich last week alone. Gingrich, by comparison, spent roughly 100,000 on broadcast and cable ads.

That looked to continue into the final week before the Christmas holiday.

Romney, who has kept Iowa at arm's length after investing heavily here four years ago only to come up short. His advisers note they have kept in touch with supporters of his 2008 campaign that came in second place in Iowa.

Lady Gaga Is Forbes' Top-Earning Woman In Music

Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Celine Dion and Adele round out the top five.

Apparently, Lady Gaga made a little bit of money this year: She tops Forbes' list of Top-Earning Women in Music in 2011.

Just how much did Gaga make this past year? According to the magazine, the singer netted $90 million thanks to sales of Born This Way, her massive Monster Ball Tour and a number of endorsement deals.

But she's not the only lady making bank this year. Coming in at #2 is Taylor Swift. The country/pop superstar managed to make $45 million over the past 12 months with the never-ending success of her Speak Now album (which she released back in 2010) and her tour of the same name.

Nipping at her heels is Katy Perry. The Billboard record-holder amassed $44 million with continued singles from 2010's Teenage Dream and her California Dreams Tour.

Perhaps the biggest surprise in the top five is Celine Dion. The Canadian singer comes in at #4 with $19 million in earnings. The singer's success is due in part to her Las Vegas stage show. Adele squeaked into the top five at #5 with $18 million, earned mostly from the album sales from her chart-dominating 21. Alicia Keys also makes the list; Forbes reports that the singer earned $10 million, beating out her hubby Swizz Beatz for the year by $3.5 million.

Forbes compiled the list using income earned from May 2010 through May 2011. It also used data from Pollstar and RIAA, as well as interviews with industry insiders and the musicians themselves.

Many of the ladies on this list also landed on MTV's Songs of the Year countdown; Gaga's "Born This Way" comes in at #5 and Perry's "Firework" sits at #10.

All this week, watch "AMTV" on MTV every day at 8 a.m. ET for our Best of 2011 lists. Then, come to MTVNews.com at 5 p.m. as we reveal our top picks of the year!

Justin Bieber stages concert at Las Vegas school (AP)

LAS VEGAS ? Teen pop icon Justin Bieber plans to perform a private Christmas concert Friday morning for an east Las Vegas elementary school known for providing needy students' families with food, clothes, money for utility bills ? and just about everything in between.

The 17-year-old star's concert, featuring songs from his holiday album "Under the Mistletoe," at Whitney Elementary School comes after the singer pledged to donate $100,000 to the school.

After Bieber announced the gift and concert on a Nov. 1 episode of "The Ellen Degeneres Show," the hundreds of students watching the taping from a multi-purpose room at their Las Vegas school erupted into screams and cheers. One girl is seen jumping up and down, and school officials say some of the students burst into tears of joy.

"For the kids, it shows that someone loves them and cares about them to follow up," Principal Sherrie Gahn told the Las Vegas Sun after the taping. "When you live in an existence where everything seems so hopeless, it's an amazing gift they will never forget. It's beyond their wildest dreams."

Whitney Elementary was first featured on "The Ellen Degeneres Show" in September. The episode highlighted how the school provides a food pantry, clothes closet, free haircuts and literacy training for students' families.

Gahn said more than 85 percent of the school's 600-plus students receive free or reduced lunch. The school also has one of the highest homeless student populations in the Clark County School District.

Gahn, who said she used to see students pocketing ketchup packets from the cafeteria in hopes of having dinner at night, told "The Ellen Degeneres Show" she made a pact with families after she arrived about eight years ago. "I'll pay your electrical bill, your utilities, I'll give you food or clothes, whatever you need, as long as you give me your child and then help raise that child as a person of character," she said.

Families at the school told the show Gahn has stayed true to her promise. One girl said Gahn provided her with a bed. A mother said the principal bought her son glasses. Another mother said the school provided her children with Christmas presents when she planned to skip the gift giving.

Gahn said most of the donations come from individuals or businesses, and she said the show has brought an outpouring of support from across the country. The school also posts a "wish list" on its website, asking for granola bars, pop-top cans of soup and other non-perishable foods that homeless students can eat for dinner or over the weekend.

Bieber's gift matches a $100,000 donation from Target that was announced on the September TV special about the school. That money is set aside to start an after-school program and continue providing services to struggling families.

"My biggest motivator for the kids and the thought and the hope that they don't have to live in this existence when they grow up ? that they break the cycle," Gahn said.

Strategy Analytics: Apple TV now leads set-top boxes (Digital Trends)

appletv_highres_original

Market research firm Strategy Analytics has issued a new report that claims Apple has captured yet another market: TV set-top boxes. Strategy Analytics expects the market for TV set-top boxes to reach 12 million units this year, with Apple accounting for nearly one third of the market, or about 4 million units. The report also finds that Apple TV owners spend more money on movies and TV shows?although the numbers are surprisingly low for a device that was essentially envisioned as a gateway to Apple?s iTunes store.

?Apple is leading this nascent market, which it still considers a ?hobby,?? said Strategy Analytics senior analyst Jia Wu, in a statement.

Overall, Strategy Analytics finds that some eight percent of U.S. households have a TV set-top box that brings in streaming or Internet-based content?that number is slightly higher than in Europe, where the figure was seven percent. Strategy Analytics attributes quickly adoption of the devices to lower price points set by the Apple TV and Roku?the second-generation Apple TV is $99, while Roku boxes start at just $49.99.

The report finds that 30 percent of Apple TV owners rented movies or TV shows through the device, compared to just 20 percent of users of other set-top box and streaming devices. The figure is surprising, given that the Apple TV was primarily envisioned as a way for users to tap into content from the iTunes store from a television rather than from a computer or other device. The percentages suggest the most popular feature of the Apple TV is not its access to the iTunes store, but rather its Netflix client and the ability to bring in content from around the home network via AirPlay.

Apple has famously described the Apple TV as a ?hobby,? and despite an exciting second-generation refresh a year ago that brought the unit?s price down to $99, has largely consigned the product to long periods of neglect as Apple focuses on other businesses. However, the apparent success of the Apple TV may bode well for the much-rumored Apple TV, fueled by Steve Jobs telling biographer Walter Isaacson that he had finally ?cracked? the problem of providing a fully integrated television experience.

UN warns of possible new recession (AP)

UNITED NATIONS ? The United Nations has sharply cut its economic projections for global growth and says that the world is at risk for a new recession.

The U.N.'s report on the World Economic Situation and Prospects 2012, released on Thursday, forecasts 2.6 percent growth next year in its main, relatively optimistic scenario ? and just 0.5 percent growth in its pessimistic scenario.

That's significantly below its May forecast that the global economy would grow 3.6 percent in 2012.

Following two year of anemic and uneven recovery from the global financial crisis, the report said, "the world economy is teetering on the brink of another major downturn" and "the risks for a double-dip recession have heightened."

RIM unveils BlackBerry Mobile Fusion for enterprise, extends reach to Android, iOS

In an apparent attempt to solidify its standing in the corporate world, RIM has unveiled a new platform that allows IT specialists to more tightly manage company devices -- even those from rival manufacturers like Apple and Android. With the BlackBerry Mobile Fusion software, announced this morning, companies will be able to set up rules governing employee passwords apps and other software across a variety of smartphones and tablets, including the iPhone, iPad and Android handsets. The system also allows managers to remotely wipe and lock any devices that go missing or stolen, potentially bringing enhanced security to a workplace that's become increasingly fragmented. "Our customers have been saying, 'We're moving to these different adoption models, and we'd like you on board with that,'" said Alan Panezic, vice president for enterprise product management, in an interview with the Wall Street Journal. Slated to launch during the first quarter of next year, Mobile Fusion represents RIM's first foray into the multi-platform management market, and may expand even further to encompass Windows Phone devices, as well. Compatible with BlackBerry OS and BBX, Mobile Fusion will also allow users to remotely manage PlayBooks from BlackBerry handsets, though that won't happen until February, when the tablet finally receives a software update. No word yet on pricing, but Panezic says it will be "competitive" with the market.

First Person: Caring for HIV and AIDS Patients a True Privilege (ContributorNetwork)

Dec. 1 is World AIDS Day. Yahoo! News asked members of our Yahoo! Contributor Network to tell us about their experiences dealing with HIV and AIDS. Submissions have been touching, heartfelt, hopeful, encouraging ? and most of all, personal.

[Your Voice: Sign up with the Yahoo! Contributor Network to share your first-person stories and experiences.]

My interest in traditional Chinese medicine -- and acupuncture in particular -- began when I had suffered a health crisis. Due to a severe personal event, I had begun to exhibit symptoms of depression, fatigue, and hair loss. A network of friends, coupled with the inability of Western medicine to diagnosis and treat my ailments, led me to acupuncturist, Mary Helen Lee, and her White Moon Healing Clinic.

Ms. Lee is by far the most amazing healer I have yet to meet. Through a series of acupuncture treatments, herbal remedies, and bodywork, my health began to improve and my symptoms subsided within 30 days. During this process, I became friends with Ms. Lee and ended up working at the White Moon Healing Clinic as an assistant. In this capacity, I did everything from welcoming patients to the clinic, to doing the laundry, to ordering herbs and stock, to mixing formulas and processing payment for patients.

In my role as clinic assistant, I was also privileged to meet and work with two long terms AIDS survivors, Joe and Gene. This was back in the '80s and '90s when the phrase "long-term AIDS survivor" was still a dream.

I use the word "privileged" not in a cheesy, insincere way or as a clich?, but to describe the lasting effect these long-term AIDS survivors have had on my life.

Every week, Joe and Gene came to their standing appointment to do battle with an immune system fighting Kaposi sarcoma. Black-and-blue bruises dotted their face, back and arms. Both were quiet and soft spoken, yet never lost their sense of engagement to life. Very often, they told funny stories about their beloved dog, bragged about a delicious new recipe, or recapped the politics of their workweek.

It wasn't unusual for patients at White Moon Healing Clinic to become friends and Joe and Gene were no different. Typically, we shared dinner or a potluck with patients. At one summer barbeque, Joe and Gene brought their dog, a side dish, and two comfortable lawn chairs. We spent a breezy afternoon eating, talking, laughing, and sharing stories.

These two guys came to personify AIDS patients for me. The hoopla over contagion and religious values aside, I saw two men for whom the struggle to beat this lethal disease dominated their lives. And yet at the same time, they did not collapse under the weight of their burden nor did they give up on the everyday joy of life.

Years later, a very good friend and renowned artist, began to fail when his HIV developed into full-blown AIDS. My friend went from 180 pounds of muscle to 108 pounds of sagging flesh in a less than two weeks. During this period, friends -- including myself -- cleaned, bathed, and watched over him.

In the same way that Joe and Gene fought to stay alive, my skin-and-bones friend fought for every breath, every step, and every moment to remain alive.

As it turned out, my friend was one of the fortunate ones. The antiretroviral cocktail had just been introduced, and it literally saved his life. Six months later, he had gained back his muscle and was back to working on his art.

Like Joe and Gene, my friend is still a survivor, still contributing, and still reminds me what true courage looks like. Truly, it was a privilege.

British Library puts 19th C newspapers online

(AP) ? The newspaper coverage was troubling: London's huge international showcase was beset by planning problems, local opposition and labor woes ? and the transport was a mess.

It sounds like the 2012 Olympics, but this was the Great Exhibition of 1851 generating stories of late trains, unscrupulous landlords and dangerous overcrowding.

Coverage of the event is found in 4 million pages of newspapers from the 18th and 19th centuries being made available online Tuesday by the British Library, in what head of newspapers Ed King calls "a digital Aladdin's Cave" for researchers.

The online archive is a partnership between the library and digital publishing firm Brightsolid, which has been scanning 8,000 pages a day from the library's vast periodical archive for the past year and plans to digitize 40 million pages over the next decade.

A glance at the stories of crime and scandal shows some things haven't changed ? including grumbling letter-writers complaining about disruption caused by the 1851 exhibition, held inside a specially built Crystal Palace in London's Hyde Park.

"People were saying, 'This isn't good, I can't ride my horse in Hyde Park,'" said King. One regional newspaper editor complained that the "celebrated p.m. fast train service to London" arrived two hours late and warned visitors "not to trust themselves to the tender mercies of the numerous private housekeepers" renting out rooms at exorbitant prices.

The library hopes the searchable online trove will be a major resource for academics and researchers. The vast majority of the British Library's 750 million pages of newspapers ? the largest collection in the world ? are currently available only on microfilm or bound in bulky volumes at a newspaper archive in north London, where the yellowing journals cover 20 miles (32 kilometers) of shelves.

"We've got 200 years of newspapers locked away," King said. "We're trying to open it up to a wider audience."

There will be a cost to download articles online, though they can be accessed for free at the library's London reading rooms.

Most of the first batch of 4 million pages are from the 19th century, and include stories about huge international events, freak accidents and local crimes, as well as articles about Victorian celebrities such as Florence Nightingale, whose nursing of troops in the Crimean War made her famous.

There are stories of war and famine, crime and punishment, alongside birth and death notices, family announcements and advertisements for soap, cocoa, marmalade, miracle cures and treatments for baldness.

Crime columns provide a glimpse at rough 19th-century justice. Newspapers printed lists of people transported to Australia for stealing money, silver, cloth, hay and, in one case, "seven cups and five saucers."

The archive includes national and regional newspapers from Britain and Ireland, as well as more specialized publications. The Cheltenham Looker-On reported on society, fashions and gossip in the genteel English spa town. The Poor Law Unions' Gazette contained vivid accounts of workhouse life, and descriptions of inmates who had absconded.

King said the library hopes the archive will also help amateur genealogists find information about their ancestors.

Library staff have already highlighted a few links to the famous, including an 1852 appearance in insolvency court by Simon Cowell's great-great-great grandfather, Michael Gashion, and a local newspaper item about the great-great grandfather of actress Kate Winslet, who was "embedded in a mass of bricks and timber" when a hotel facade fell on him in 1903.

Bob Satchwell of press trade group the Society of Editors welcomed the archive ? some good news for newspapers amid all the negative press from Britain's ongoing phone hacking scandal.

He said the website "opens up a magical new window on a magnificent treasure trove of real history, recording the lives of ordinary people doing extraordinary things in vibrant communities, rather than merely the cold facts of politics and pestilence."
