Authorities say he fled in a taxi but the driver flagged down a transit police officer after being concerned her passenger would leave without paying.
Police say that officer didn't know about the robbery attempt and talked Gladston into returning to the bank to withdraw money for the cab ride. He later was arrested.

He added that decisions over individual developments were for the relevant planning authority, who were accountable to local people, and supported by experts in organisations such as Scottish Natural Heritage and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency.

The telescope studies the formation of stars, and has taken some remarkable pictures since its launch in May 2009.
But its detectors require a constant supply of superfluid helium to keep working, and the store of this coolant has now dropped to less than 100kg.
This past week saw Herschel begin what engineers believe will be the final 365 days of its working life.
"There's quite a bit of uncertainty in all this, of course," said Dr Paul Goldsmith from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, US.
"It could be 11 months, it could be 14 months, and we're naturally hoping for the latter. It's certainly true that we have enough observations proposed to go well past the year if the helium lasts that long," he told BBC News.
Dr Goldsmith has been discussing the observatory's successes during a special seminar here at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
He is the US space agency (Nasa) project scientist on the mission. Although principally a European Space Agency (Esa) venture, Herschel has a 6% contribution from the Americans, who provided some mission-enabling technology for two of the telescope's three instruments.
But in what is an indication of just how well the US has been able to leverage that 6%, it is likely that about a half of the remaining opportunity observations on Herschel will in its last year be led by astronomers from American institutions.
"Herschel has been so open," said Margaret Meixner, an astronomer at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Maryland.
"There's been no counting of how much time Europe has had or how much America and Canada have had - it's been about whatever the best science is. I don't think there's ever been a space telescope quite like that."
Herschel was launched in May 2009 and sent to an observing position 1.5 million km from Earth.

To pick it up, parts of Herschel's instruments have to be cooled to near absolute zero (-273.15C), and this has been made possible by a store of superchilled helium. The telescope was launched with more than 2,000 litres, and this has been gradually boiling off as operations have progressed.
When it is all gone, the temperature of the instruments and its detectors will rise and the telescope will go blind.
The minimum expectation had been for 3.5 years of observations. The amount of helium still left in Herschel's tank, or cryostat, means this objective should be surpassed quite easily.
Dr Meixner said Herschel's legacy would be long-lived.
"The thing about the great observatories is that they make huge data archives that live on for decades.
"Herschel, because of its exquisite sensitivity, really is going to be a pathfinder for future projects in this area for at least 30-plus years.
"Facilities just coming on line like [the radio telescope] Alma have very small fields of view - people need to know where to point, and they are going to run to the Herschel archive and say 'where do I look?'. It's how they will do their source selection."
Dr Meixner showed the meeting an image she has just acquired using Herschel. It is a view of the Large Magallenic Cloud, a small satellite galaxy to our own Milky Way.
"It's my latest pride and joy," she told BBC News.
"It looks like a fiery image, but what you're seeing there is all the dust emission from that galaxy. It's very knotty and filamentous - it's sort of like the chaos of creation. Those filaments and stuff are where the stars are going to form in that galaxy."

A bit of news about Android applications on the BlackBerry PlayBook, that looks good for users but certainly won't make any developers happy -- RIM has confirmed that Android apps ported to the PlayBook won't be able to support mobile ads. RIM is giving PlayBooks away to Android application developers who want to port their work to BlackBerry App World (the official RIM BlackBerry marketplace), so we're pretty sure they want developers to make their way over, but blocking the biggest source of revenue for them is a bit of a mistake if you ask me.
To be fair, it could be a technical limitation. According to Jeff Gadway, RIM Senior Brand and Market Communication specialist, the ability may be added in a later release. RIM certainly needs all the help it can muster to pump up their brand in the eyes of consumers, and a quick influx of thousands of apps to use with the Android Player is an easy method to do just that. I'm certain their long-term strategy will revolve around native applications designed for the BlackBerry platform, and hopefully some of the Android developers they attract will stick along for the ride.
Leaked documents from the Heartland Institute, which seeks to promote global warming skepticism, show an array of unlikely donors.
The climate change debate just got noisier. Leaked internal documents from the Heartland Institute have revealed the Chicago-based think tank's strategies for promulgating skepticism of the belief that humans are warming the planet.

The documents were acquired through email by an outside source pretending to be a part of the Institute. They were then posted on the DeSmogBlog, a blog that seeks to discredit industry-funded climate skepticism, and their contents have been widely dissected in news reports. But few media outlets go into detail about exactly what the Heartland Institute is.
Founded in 1984 by Chicago investor David H. Padden, the Heartland Institute initially focused on government policies that affected the American Midwest. Now it seeks to influence policies that have an impact on the entire planet.
According to its website?the Heartland Institute promotes laissez-faire economics, stating that its mission is to "discover, develop, and promote free-market solutions to social and economic problems."
Heartland's current CEO is Joseph L. Blast. Its staff of 40 works mostly in its Chicago offices, but the Institute also has 10 employees in Washington, D.C. Its panel of policy advisors, who provide what the Institute calls "Intellectual Ammunition", includes 130 members, most of whom are economics and law professors. Despite its conservative?philosophy, the Heartland Institute says that "is not affiliated with any political party, business, or foundation."
In reality, the Heartland Institute is an amorphous nexus of different groups and interests with just enough overlap in their ideologies to gather under the banner of a mission statement, but not enough to make the Institute a cohesive special-interest group. At the surface, the institute is composed of economists, businesspeople, politicians, and contrarian scientists.
But Heartland has deeper, less-apparent connections with a number of politically conservative groups, including the Cooler Heads Coalition, the Heritage Foundation and, notably, the influential American Legislative Exchange Council, along with many others. The web of institutional, individual, and corporate ties is endless, which may be why Heartland is so hard to define, and to criticize, compared to, for example, a registered lobbying group.
The Institute boasts what it calls 'a diverse funding base,' which includes roughly 1,600 individuals, foundations, and corporations. Heartland expects to raise $7.7 million this year. In 2006, the Institute stated that only a quarter of its income came from corporate sponsors. That same year, however, the organization said that it would stop?publicly?declaring its funding sources.
The leaked documents revealed current donors, some of whom are surprising. According to the documents, Microsoft donated about $60,000, and the pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKlein gave about $50,000. Both of these companies told the New York Times that their contributions were billed for projects unrelated to climate-change policy.?
Curiously, there was a notable absence of funding from publicly traded oil companies, although the privately owned Koch Industries ? a major oil refiner ? was indirectly represented by its co-owner's contribution of $25,000, through his own charity foundation. Perhaps most interesting is the revelation that an anonymous donor gave the institute $4.6 million in 2008, $1.6 million in 2010 and nearly $1 million in 2011. This donor's contributions bring into question Heartland's purported 'diverse funding base.' According to the documents, the donor has promised to give even more in 2012.

?You cannot beat a roulette table unless you steal money from it,? Albert Einstein once said.
The legendary theoretical physicist likely would have passed on the chance to buy into?last week?s Caesars (NASDAQ:CZR) IPO. And considering the subsequent performance of CZR and the headwinds facing the gaming industry right now, the best play might well be to wait for better odds.
While an improving economy and white-hot growth in Macau drove casino stocks to new heights in 2011, the smart money in today?s market will value sustainable returns over eye-popping ? but volatile ? immediate gains. Consider Caesars, which roared out of the gate with a 58% return last Wednesday but has lost speed in every session since.
One week?s action on an IPO does not a trend make ? particularly since the offering represented only a tiny fraction of the casino?s shares. Still, the stock?s quick flash and subsequent flameout illustrates the gaming industry?s abiding truth: The only sure thing about luck is how fast it can change.
The past five years have been a nonstop roller-coaster ride for casino stocks. From pinnacle performance in 2006 and early 2007, major stocks in the sector lost 80% to 90% of their value in less than 24 months. But as the U.S. economy has improved and opportunities have opened up in Macau, a former Portuguese colony now administered by the People?s Republic of China, the industry?s fortunes have rebounded dramatically. Some gaming stocks ? particularly casino owners with high-end properties in Macau ? saw 50% to 60% share-price growth in 2011.
While Macau remains an attractive opportunity for casinos such as Melco Crown Entertainment (NASDAQ:MPEL), Wynn Resorts (NYSE:WYNN) and MGM Resorts (NYSE:MGM), growth is likely to slow from a January level of nearly 35% to a more sustainable 15% to 20% in the second half of this year.
The Securities & Exchange Commission has taken an interest in some casino companies? Macau operations. While the agency has not charged any company with wrongdoing, it is reviewing documents related to the Macau gaming licenses of WYNN and Las Vegas Sands (NYSE:LVS).
A winning play in casino stocks this year will look a lot different than it did in 2011. First, you can?t expect monster returns. Growth in Macau will slow as business operations broaden their focus beyond VIP junkets from China. U.S. regional operators such as Boyd Gaming (NYSE:BYD) and Penn National (NYSE:PENN) will have a better year than they did in 2011, but stronger competition from tribal gaming operations could have a negative impact.
Of course, there are no sure things in the gaming sector. All of these stocks are far from recession-proof and will take a hit if the economy slips. Most operators are carrying quite a bit of debt, and even the high-roller growth in Macau is by no means stable at this point. But if you have a little mad money stashed away, four of the companies mentioned above have relatively sustainable gaming stocks to play now:
Melco Crown Entertainment
If you believe in the China opportunity enough to let it all ride on Macau, MPEL is as much of a pure play as you?re going to get. MPEL blew investors? socks off last week with news that its opulent City of Dreams Casino posted fourth-quarter earnings of $107.5 million on $1 billion in revenue. That?s nearly six times higher than the profit it posted for the same quarter a year earlier ? and revenue was up 30%, too. With a market cap of $6.6 billion, MPEL is trading at $12 ? 85% above its 52-week low in April 2011. MPEL has total cash of $1.2 billion and total debt of $2.3 billion. Its one-year return is 66%.
Las Vegas Sands
Despite its old-school name, LVS is a huge player in Macau. It boasts the world?s largest casino ? the 3,000-suite Venetian Macau ? which dominates the prime Cotai Strip. With a market cap of $42 billion, LVS is trading around $52 ? 44% above its 52-week low in March 2011. LVS has total cash of about $4 billion and total debt of $9.7 billion. Its one-year return is 8%, but take note: This stock has been extremely volatile over the past year.
Wynn Resorts
WYNN also boasts a high-roller-friendly facility, the Wynn Macau, with its Sky Casino. It plans to open the Cotai Resort Hotel on the strip in 2015. Chairman and CEO Steve Wynn?s high-profile tiff with right-hand man Kazuo Okada sparked the SEC?s interest and has the potential to become a distraction. With a market cap of nearly $14 billion, WYNN is trading around $111 ? 10% above its 52-week low in December. WYNN has total cash of about $2 billion and total debt of $3.1 billion. Its one-year return is -7.8%, but it?s poised to gain if Macau continues to grow and the SEC inquiry is favorably resolved.
MGM Resorts
As Las Vegas casino revenue grows, so do?MGM?s prospects. The Nevada Gaming Control Board last week said December gambling revenue on the strip rose by 3.6%, and slot-machine revenue rose over 6%. Convention attendance also rose dramatically last year. While MGM Macau has helped ease the profit pinch, the company?s best opportunity may be a new social-media game inspired by Zynga?s (NASDAQ:ZNGA) FarmVille. With a market cap of $7 billion, MGM is trading around $14.50 ? 96% above its 52-week low last November. MGM has total cash of about $2 billion and total debt of $14.5 billion. Its one-year return is -4%, but its financial position is strengthening, and the stock has some upside.

Smoking bans in public/workplaces don't drive smokers to light up more at home, suggests a study of four European countries with smoke free legislation, published online in Tobacco Control.
If anything, a ban may prompt smokers to smoke less at home, the research suggests.
The authors base their findings on two waves of the International Tobacco Control Policy Evaluation Project (ITC Project) Europe Surveys.
These were carried out before and after legislation banning smoking in public places had come into force in Ireland, France, Germany and the Netherlands, and in the UK, excluding Scotland, before legislation was enacted.
The surveys, which were conducted between 2003/4 and 2008/9, depending on when bans took effect, involved 4634 smokers in the four countries with smoke free legislation and 1080 smokers in the UK, which served as comparison country at a time when no public/workplace smoking ban had come into force.
Before a ban came into force, most smokers had at least partial restrictions on smoking at home, although the proportions varied significantly among all four countries, with the highest levels of restrictions in Germany and France.
The presence of a young child in the household and supporting a smoking ban in bars were key factors associated with choosing to restrict smoking at home.
After legislation was enacted, the percentage of smokers who banned smoking at home increased significantly in all countries, rising by 25% in Ireland, 17% in France, 38% in Germany and 28% in the Netherlands by the time of the second survey.
This increase was irrespective of whether the public/workplace smoking ban was comprehensive or allowed for some exceptions.
Home smoking bans were more likely to be adopted when the smoker planned to quit smoking, when there was a birth of a child, and among those smokers who supported a smoking ban in bars.
In the UK, the percentage of smokers who implemented a home smoking ban also rose 22% between the two surveys, the second of which was carried out just a few months before the smoking ban came into force.
After taking account of several demographic and smoking history variables, the percentage of continuing smokers banning smoking at home increased significantly in all four countries, but did not significantly increase in the UK.
Current thinking suggests that the consequences of banning smoking in public end up either boosting the amount of smoking at home as smokers try to compensate?the displacement hypothesis?or encouraging smokers to apply the same restrictions at home?the social diffusion hypothesis.
"Opponents of workplace or public smoking bans have argued that smoke-free policies?albeit intended to protect non-smokers from tobacco smoke?could lead to displacement of smoking into the home and hence even increase the second hand smoke exposure of non-smoking family members and, most importantly, children," write the authors.
In fact, the findings support the "social diffusion hypothesis"?that banning smoking in public places "may stimulate smokers to establish total smoking bans in their homes."

Imagine a murder in your neighbourhood. The police release a photofit. They put it on Facebook. You see it?and recognise the murderer: it?s you.
That?s what citizens of the German city of Hanover are afraid of. In Hanover, local police have implemented?a pilot scheme called ?Fahndung via Facebook? ? manhunt via Facebook ? to find criminals through the?power of social media.
They?ve been successful, too: since its introduction in March 2011 the scheme has?led to eight arrests. More than that, it is popular enough to justify plans to roll it out in all of Germany. But?critics aware of the error-prone world of criminal investigation and photofit speculation see a great threat to?data protection creeping up on the country.
Hanover?s ministry of justice and Lower Saxony?s data protection commissioner are more than sceptical of?the project. Photofits aren?t exactly the most reliable source of reference. Even the latest e-fit software simply?can?t compensate for human error. Witnesses often describe the suspect in a distressed state, after getting no?more than a short glance at their face. Unable to recall a lot of detail, the picture turns out to be misleading.
Bad photofits have been around for long enough, but released on Facebook instead of being treated?confidentially, a false assumption would spread like wildfire and have dramatic consequences for the?wrongly accused.
In an attempt to stop the pilot scheme in its tracks, Germany?s data protection commissioner raised concerns?and interrupted Fahndung via Facebook for two weeks in January. The argument: Information about an?official manhunt may never be stored on a server located outside of the state it was issued in.
As fair of a point as that is, Germany?s Secretary of the Interior, Uwe Sch?nemann?(pictured below), liked the Facebook hunt?too much to just let it go. The commissioner?s concerns were dropped after two weeks, when the ministry?announced it wouldn?t publish any official information on Facebook?s US servers anymore. Instead, the police will?only link to the cases on Facebook and lead users to their own server located, of course, in Hanover.
This could go much further. The ?Polizei Hannover? Facebook page has almost 100,000 fans by now ? not?bad for a city that?s home to roughly 500,000 people. 69% of their Facebook fans are aged between 18 and?34, an age group hardly approachable through old-fashioned manhunt calls in print media anymore.
The one fifth of Hanover?s population has already helped to identify and arrest eight criminals, some?involved in cases like sexual assault and child abduction. ?I have therefore decided to keep using the Web 2.0?and specifically the social network Facebook to support the methods of manhunt,? secretary Sch?nemann?told the German daily Zeit.de.

Modern and future-geared police forces in other parts of Germany are keeping a curious eye on Hanover?s?Facebook hunt as well. Berlin and Brandenburg are only two other federal states currently inspecting under?what frame conditions they could implement the scheme locally. A representative of the German ministry of?the interior even mentioned plans for a country-wide enforcement, teaming up with all 50 of Germany?s?police authorities. And Facebook is just the beginning. Next stop is the Twitter manhunt.
Data protection issues are often and ? as they were in this case ? easily dodged. Germany is very likely to have?the scheme in place across the entire country soon. If it continuously proves to be effective, other countries?will follow. Whether or not data protectionists will continue to try and stop this process is another question.?So far it is these concerns against the eight arrests that might not have happened without social media.
