New Samsung Galaxy Note 2 ad targets business

Samsung has just put out a fresh ad for the Galaxy Note 2 targeting enterprise users. In the span of a minute, it does a great job of showing how the Note 2 can be used to take notes, watch video, multitask, and transfer files over NFC. Despite being about work, it still has the same sense of humor as Samsung's previous TV spots, and I'm tempted to agree with the top-voted YouTube commenter for the ad: "Apple is going to have to get more creative with their marketing. Samsung is killing it."

Hit the jump for a playlist of Samsung's more holiday-themed ads.

(AP) ? Truth is, retired Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf didn't care much for his popular "Stormin' Norman" nickname.

The seemingly no-nonsense Desert Storm commander's reputed temper with aides and subordinates supposedly earned him that rough-and-ready moniker. But others around the general, who died Thursday in Tampa, Fla., at age 78 from complications from pneumonia, knew him as a friendly, talkative and even jovial figure who preferred the somewhat milder sobriquet given by his troops: "The Bear."

That one perhaps suited him better later in his life, when he supported various national causes and children's charities while eschewing the spotlight and resisting efforts to draft him to run for political office.

He lived out a quiet retirement in Tampa, where he'd served his last military assignment and where an elementary school bearing his name is testament to his standing in the community.

Schwarzkopf capped an illustrious military career by commanding the U.S.-led international coalition that drove Saddam Hussein's forces out of Kuwait in 1991 ? but he'd managed to keep a low profile in the public debate over the second Gulf War against Iraq, saying at one point that he doubted victory would be as easy as the White House and the Pentagon predicted.

Schwarzkopf was named commander in chief of U.S. Central Command at Tampa's MacDill Air Force Base in 1988, overseeing the headquarters for U.S. military and security concerns in nearly two dozen countries stretching across the Middle East to Afghanistan and the rest of central Asia, plus Pakistan.

When Saddam invaded Kuwait two years later to punish it for allegedly stealing Iraqi oil reserves, Schwarzkopf commanded Operation Desert Storm, the coalition of some 30 countries organized by President George H.W. Bush that succeeded in driving the Iraqis out.

At the peak of his postwar national celebrity, Schwarzkopf ? a self-proclaimed political independent ? rejected suggestions that he run for office, and remained far more private than other generals, although he did serve briefly as a military commentator for NBC.

While focused primarily on charitable enterprises in his later years, he campaigned for President George W. Bush in 2000, but was ambivalent about the 2003 invasion of Iraq. In early 2003 he told The Washington Post that the outcome was an unknown: "What is postwar Iraq going to look like, with the Kurds and the Sunnis and the Shiites? That's a huge question, to my mind. It really should be part of the overall campaign plan."

Initially Schwarzkopf had endorsed the invasion, saying he was convinced that Secretary of State Colin Powell had given the United Nations powerful evidence of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction. After that proved false, he said decisions to go to war should depend on what U.N. weapons inspectors found.

He seldom spoke up during the conflict, but in late 2004 he sharply criticized Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and the Pentagon for mistakes that included erroneous judgments about Iraq and inadequate training for Army reservists sent there.

"In the final analysis I think we are behind schedule. ... I don't think we counted on it turning into jihad (holy war)," he said in an NBC interview.

Schwarzkopf was born Aug. 24, 1934, in Trenton, N.J., where his father, Col. H. Norman Schwarzkopf, founder and commander of the New Jersey State Police, was then leading the investigation of the Lindbergh kidnap case. That investigation ended with the arrest and 1936 execution of German-born carpenter Richard Hauptmann for murdering famed aviator Charles Lindbergh's infant son.

The elder Schwarzkopf was named Herbert, but when the son was asked what his "H'' stood for, he would reply, "H."

As a teenager Norman accompanied his father to Iran, where the elder Schwarzkopf trained the Iran's national police force and was an adviser to Reza Pahlavi, the young Shah of Iran.

Young Norman studied there and in Switzerland, Germany and Italy, then followed in his father's footsteps to West Point, graduating in 1956 with an engineering degree. After stints in the U.S. and abroad, he earned a master's degree in engineering at the University of Southern California and later taught missile engineering at West Point.

In 1966 he volunteered for Vietnam and served two tours, first as a U.S. adviser to South Vietnamese paratroops and later as a battalion commander in the U.S. Army's Americal Division. He earned three Silver Stars for valor ? including one for saving troops from a minefield ? plus a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart and three Distinguished Service Medals.

While many career officers left military service embittered by Vietnam, Schwarzkopf was among those who opted to stay and help rebuild the tattered Army into a potent, modernized all-volunteer force.

After Saddam invaded Kuwait in August 1990, Schwarzkopf played a key diplomatic role by helping persuade Saudi Arabia's King Fahd to allow U.S. and other foreign troops to deploy on Saudi territory as a staging area for the war to come.

On Jan. 17, 1991, a five-month buildup called Desert Shield became Operation Desert Storm as allied aircraft attacked Iraqi bases and Baghdad government facilities. The six-week aerial campaign climaxed with a massive ground offensive on Feb. 24-28, routing the Iraqis from Kuwait in 100 hours before U.S. officials called a halt.

Schwarzkopf said afterward he agreed with Bush's decision to stop the war rather than drive to Baghdad to capture Saddam, as his mission had been only to oust the Iraqis from Kuwait.

But in a desert tent meeting with vanquished Iraqi generals, he allowed a key concession on Iraq's use of helicopters, which later backfired by enabling Saddam to crack down more easily on rebellious Shiites and Kurds.

While he later avoided the public second-guessing by academics and think tank experts over the ambiguous outcome of the first Gulf War and its impact on the second Gulf War, he told The Washington Post in 2003, "You can't help but ... with 20/20 hindsight, go back and say, 'Look, had we done something different, we probably wouldn't be facing what we are facing today.'"

After retiring from the Army in 1992, Schwarzkopf wrote a best-selling autobiography, "It Doesn't Take A Hero." Of his Gulf War role, he said: "I like to say I'm not a hero. I was lucky enough to lead a very successful war." He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II and honored with decorations from France, Britain, Belgium, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Bahrain.

Schwarzkopf was a national spokesman for prostate cancer awareness and for Recovery of the Grizzly Bear, served on the Nature Conservancy board of governors and was active in various charities for chronically ill children.

"I may have made my reputation as a general in the Army and I'm very proud of that," he once told The Associated Press. "But I've always felt that I was more than one-dimensional. I'd like to think I'm a caring human being. ... It's nice to feel that you have a purpose."

Schwarzkopf and his wife, Brenda, had three children: Cynthia, Jessica and Christian.

Lyft Staffing Up In Seattle And Los Angeles As It Looks To Expand Its Ride-Sharing Service Beyond SF

Lyft carLyft, the local on-demand ride-sharing service operated by the startup Zimride, is apparently not letting recent regulatory hurdles cramp its style too much. Lyft, which launched its service allowing individual car-owners to provide local transportation services to their peers in exchange for a suggested donation in San Francisco this past summer, is now actively recruiting staff in new cities including Seattle and Los Angeles as part of a planned geographic expansion in the new year.

Newly discovered loris may be slow, but its bite is toxic

A new slow loris species was discovered in Borneo, named Nycticebus kayan.?The little primate weighs less than a pound.

By Jeanna Bryner,?LiveScience.com / December 14, 2012

The newly discovered slow loris primate (Nycticebus kayan) has a furry "face mask" distinct from other slow loris species.

A new small primate with a toxic bite and distinctive facial fur markings has been discovered in the jungles of Borneo.

The new slow loris species is found in the highlands of the island of Borneo and has been named Nycticebus kayan, after a major river, the Kayan, flowing through the region. The trio of scientists also found that two species previously considered sub-species in the Nycticebus genus are officially unique species.

"Historically, many species went unrecognized as they were falsely lumped together as one species," researcher Rachel Munds, of the University of Missouri Columbia, said in a statement.

Closely related to lemurs, the slow loris is found across Southeast Asia, from Bangladesh and China's Yunnan province to Borneo. To distinguish between species, the researchers focused on the seeming face masks of Borneo's slow lorises; fur patches cover their eyes, while their heads are covered with differently shaped caps. The examined photographs and museum samples for eight face mask features, finding there were four species of Bornean lorises. [See Photos of the Slow Loris Primates]

The new species to science, N. kayan, showed a dark, highly contrasting face mask, with dark patches around its eyes. From the specimen examined, the species is about 10.8 inches (273 millimeters) long and weighs about 14.5 ounces (411 grams). The other species include: N. menagensis, N. bancanus and N. borneanus. (N. menagensis had already been recognized as a species.)

The newly identified species illustrate the breadth of biodiversity yet to be discovered in the jungles of Borneo and nearby islands, the researchers noted. The slow lorises, as with other animals on these islands, face threats from human activity.

"The pet trade is a serious threat for slow lorises in Indonesia, and recognition of these new species raises issues regarding where to release confiscated Bornean slow lorises, as recognition by nonexperts can be difficult," said study researcher Anna Nekaris, of Oxford Brookes University in England, in a statement.

Munds, Nekaris and co-author Susan Ford of Southern Illinois University also note this week in the American Journal of Primatology that their results confirm the use of fur color and pattern as a valid way of distinguishing between species of small primates. Some researchers, they wrote, had claimed that because Bornean slow lorises are not a diverse group because they share similar cranial features and all are lacking an upper second incisor. The new study suggests otherwise, the team added.

Dot Earth Blog: Dot Shot: Tiger Cubs in Russia's Far East

The Wildlife Conservation Society is reporting that this year has seen significant progress in safeguarding tigers and some of their last havens in Russia, Thailand and India ? three countries where the endangered species still has a solid base from which populations could expand if protections increase. The organization today released this image, taken by an automated camera last year in eastern Siberia.

The Green Blog has much of the background on developments in these three countries.

Heart calcium scan predictive of diabetes-related death from cardiovascular disease

Dec. 20, 2012 ? People with Type 2 diabetes have two to four times the risk of cardiovascular disease compared to people without the disease. The best way for doctors to predict which diabetes patients are at the greatest risk for heart disease is to use a coronary artery calcium (CAC) test in addition to the most commonly used assessment tool, according to researchers at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

Current medical guidelines recommend treating all diabetes patients as high risk, but the Wake Forest Baptist study found that CAC can identify diabetes patients who are at very high risk for developing potentially fatal cardiovascular disease, as well as those who are at low risk. "Our observations challenge accepted medical knowledge that all people with diabetes have the same risk. CAC is key in predicting the specific risk level," said Donald Bowden, Ph.D., professor of biochemistry at Wake Forest Baptist and senior author of the study, which is published online in the December issue of the journal Diabetes Care.

"People at very high risk are 11 times more likely to die from cardiovascular diseases as compared to those at low risk. Diagnosing a more precise risk level should help doctors provide more effective treatments and hopefully improve outcomes," he said.

The community-based Diabetes Heart Study was designed to determine if CAC provided additional information about cardiovascular disease and mortality beyond the Framingham Risk Score, the most commonly used assessment tool. A total of 1,123 people with Type 2 diabetes between 34 to 86 years old were followed for an average of 7.4 years. The study participants were recruited from clinics in western North Carolina and reflect a cross section of families with diabetes-affected members in the region.

CAC uses a CT scan to detect calcium build-up in the arteries of the heart. According to Bowden, the cost of the test is relatively low and the radiation exposure is about half of what someone would get in a year "by just walking around."

"Based on our study, we think that CAC should be added to the Framingham tool as the standard of care for all people with diabetes," Bowden said.

The Wake Forest Baptist team hopes to conduct additional research on how adding CAC as a diagnostic tool for diabetics could affect treatment and outcomes.

2 Ways To Get An Edge In Your Internet Business

To have success with your own online business, you have to stay on top of the marketplace. Nothing is more important than keeping up with the latest ideas, news, concepts, and principles that play a huge role in your niche. That?s why it?s a good idea to subscribe to a few magazines or trade journals in your niche, just to be on top of everything.

This is the first step towards gaining dominance in your internet business. With so many competitors out there, you need an edge to help you stay on top of the pile. And fortunately for you, there are ways that you can stay up to date with everything, all while still making a nice living via your internet business.

In this article, I want to share with you some things that you can do to stay on top of the marketplace so that you can see and understand what you need to do to stay competitive. These tips are necessary if you want to have the success in your business that you are looking for.

In fact, here?s tip number 1 for having that ?edge? in your online business:

1) Add seminars into your business

Every year you?re in business you should offer a seminar to your customers. Your seminar cost should be around $1,000 - $2,000 - but nothing less than $1,000. You can really have a surge in your income immediately just by having this event. Imagine if you were to get 100 people to pay and attend your seminar.

You will have earned $100,000 for just a few days!

You don?t want your seminar to be too long. A 3-day seminar shall suffice. It?s up to you if you want to pamper your attendees with snacks, foods, and drinks - but if you?re making $100,000 per seminar, it?s probably best to pamper your attendees just a little bit. Here?s another tip for having an edge in your internet business.

2) Incorporate offline marketing

Very few of your competitors are using direct mail to sell to their existing clients. This is a great opportunity for you to increase your conversion rates from your backend customers, and to present a ?personal? touch of yourself in their lives. People want to get to know you and have a relationship with you, and with direct mail, you can do just that.

If you don?t want to do direct mail, you could always run display ads in the magazines and trade journals that you are apart of. These are typically inexpensive, and with a high cost product on your website, you could probably turn this advertising medium into something profitable.

These ideas of how you can gain an edge in your niche and stay afloat amongst all of the other competition are simple and easy to use. They require nothing special? all you have to do is carry them out, and implement them in an organized manner. They will be sure to make you profitable. They can make you extremely profitable.

Good luck with earning money in your online business today.

The Hottest Interval Training Program of the Year: The ?10-20-30 ...

For several years, the catchphrases in fitness have been ?high-intensity interval training? (HIIT) and ?less is more?.

There are many ?formulas? for interval training and a precise ?10-20-30? or formula was discovered by the University of Copenhagen in a published a study (Gunnarsson and Bangsbo, 2012).? ?The researchers wanted to create a fast, easy and effective workout that exercisers would be motivated by despite their fitness level.

The regimen improved study participants run times despite cutting their workout time in half. And it reduced their blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

The study experimented with 30 second intervals and deemed them demanding so experimented with shorter intervals and found that the shorter 10 second sprint interval worked well.

This workout can be completed in 20-30 minutes. The speed represents a relative speed and not a specific speed so it is flexible enough for all fitness levels.

10-20-30 Sample Workout

Warm up for 10 minutes.

(The 10-20-30 makes more sense to me if you rename it 30-20-10).

For one minute run slowly for 30 seconds, then normally for 20 seconds then at a sprint speed for 10 seconds. Repeat 4 more minutes for a total of 5 minutes. Then walk slowly to rest for two minutes. Do for a total of 20-30 minutes.

If you aren?t used to working at this intensity start slowly.

Prime Time at T Street: Surfing America's third Prime event of the ...

Colt Ward of San Clemente won the Boys U18 division at the Surfing America Prime contest at T Street Beach, December 8-9. Photo by Jack McDaniel

By Andrea Swayne

The third event of the six-contest Surfing America Prime West series went down December 8 and 9 at T Street Beach in San Clemente with plenty of success for local surfers, a live webcast and a charity toy drive.

Two of five divisions and five of 20 trophies were won by local surfers as a worldwide audience looked on via a live webcast. The annual Prime Series tradition of hosting a Camp Pendleton Marines? Toys for Tots toy drive also showed the generosity of competitors as they filled the giant ?toy box? with new, unwrapped toys as they checked in for their heats.

The waves were on the weak side, and true to form for T Street, a bit tricky. But that didn?t hamper the performances by this talented group of surfers as they displayed wave after wave of high scoring maneuvers both critical, in the classic style, and progressive, with high-flying aerials.

San Clemente?s Tia Blanco (Girls U16) and Colt Ward (Boys U18) capitalized on the home break advantage, battling their way through heats filled with some of the best surfers under 18 on the West Coast to win their divisions at the invitation only event.

Blanco also took a second-place finish in the Girls U18 and was joined on the podium by fellow San Clemente surfer Malia Osterkamp in fourth. Josh Benjoya of Dana Point took the fourth-place spot in Boys U18.

Day two of the event was webcast live through a partnership with iBN Sports Network and The Surf Channel. The play-by-play was expertly called by PacSun USA Surf Team coach Ryan Simmons and big wave pro surfer Peter Mel. Surf Channel network reporters were on hand to interview heat winning surfers following each round, as well.

If you weren?t able the action live, no worries, all of the exciting footage will be available on demand via a link through the Surfing America website at www.surfingamerica.org or directly via the iBN Sports Network YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/ibnsportsnetwork. The Surfing America website and Facebook page have also been loaded up with great photos from the event, thanks to official photographer Jack McDaniel.

Wildcard slots into the upcoming event No. 3 of the three-contest American Pro Surfing Series set for Saturday in Huntington Beach were up for grabs, raising the stakes a bit for the eldest age divisions in the Prime contest. The wildcards were awarded to Girls U18 winner Samantha Lamirand of Cardiff and Boys U18 winner Kanoa Igarashi of Huntington Beach.

The next Surfing America Prime West contest is set for January 20 and 21 in Santa Cruz.

'Lincoln' leads Golden Globes with 7 nominations

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) ? Steven Spielberg's Civil War epic "Lincoln" led the Golden Globes on Thursday with seven nominations, among them best drama, best director for Spielberg and acting honors for Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field and Tommy Lee Jones.

Tied for second-place with five nominations each, including best drama are Ben Affleck's Iran hostage-crisis thriller "Argo" and Quentin Tarantino's slave-turned-bounty-hunter tale "Django Unchained."

Other best-drama nominees put forward by The Hollywood Foreign Press Association are Ang Lee's shipwreck story "Life of Pi" and Kathryn Bigelow's Osama bin Laden manhunt thriller "Zero Dark Thirty."

Nominated for best musical or comedy were: the British retiree adventure "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel"; the Victor Hugo musical "Les Miserables"; the first-love tale "Moonrise Kingdom"; the fishing romance "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen"; and the lost-soul romance "Silver Linings Playbook."

Globe attention can give contenders a boost for Hollywood's top honors, the Academy Awards, whose nominations come out Jan. 10, three days before the Globe ceremony.

The directing lineup came entirely from dramatic films, with Affleck, Bigelow, Lee, Spielberg and Tarantino all in the running.

"It's very gratifying to get this many nominations from the HFPA for a film I worked so hard on and am so passionate about. I look forward to having fun at the Golden Globes with my cast mates and fellow nominees," Tarantino said in a statement.

Filmmakers behind best musical or comedy nominees were shut out for director, including Tom Hooper for "Les Miserables" and David O. Russell for "Silver Linings Playbook."

Along with Day-Lewis as Abraham Lincoln in Spielberg's epic, best dramatic actor contenders are Richard Gere as a deceitful Wall Streeter in "Arbitrage"; John Hawkes as a polio victim trying to lose his virginity in "The Sessions"; Joaquin Phoenix as a Navy veteran under the sway of a cult leader in "The Master"; and Denzel Washington as a boozy airline pilot in "Flight."

Dramatic-actress nominees are Jessica Chastain as a CIA analyst hunting Osama bin Laden in "Zero Dark Thirty"; Marion Cotillard as a whale biologist beset by tragedy in "Rust and Bone"; Helen Mirren as Alfred Hitchcock's strong-minded wife in "Hitchcock"; Naomi Watts as a woman caught up in a devastating tsunami in "The Impossible"; and Rachel Weisz as a woman ruined by an affair in "The Deep Blue Sea."

For musical or comedy actress, the lineup is Emily Blunt as a consultant for a Mideast sheik in "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen"; Judi Dench as a widow who retires overseas in "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel"; Jennifer Lawrence as a young widow in a new romance in "Silver Linings Playbook"; Maggie Smith as an aging singer in a retirement home in "Quartet"; and Meryl Streep as a wife trying to save her marriage in "Hope Springs."

Nominees for musical or comedy actor are Jack Black as a solicitous mortician in "Bernie"; Bradley Cooper as a troubled man fresh out of a mental hospital in "Silver Linings Playbook"; Hugh Jackman as Hugo's long-suffering hero Jean Valjean in "Les Miserables"; Ewan McGregor as a British fisheries expert in "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen"; and Bill Murray as Franklin Roosevelt in "Hyde Park on Hudson."

Cooper said he watched the telecast from his mother's bedroom in Los Angeles and both were thrilled when co-presenter Megan Fox called his name.

"It's funny, you're listening, you're watching their mouths move, you know, and trying to see if they're going to form your word, the word of your name. It's actually kind of pathetic. So when Megan Fox actually said Bradley Cooper, I thought, 'Oh wow!'"

Competing for supporting actor are Alan Arkin as a Hollywood producer helping a CIA operation in "Argo"; Leonardo DiCaprio as a cruel slave owner in "Django Unchained"; Philip Seymour Hoffman as a mesmerizing cult leader in "The Master"; Tommy Lee Jones as firebrand abolitionist Thaddeus Stevens in "Lincoln"; and Christoph Waltz as a genteel bounty hunter in "Django Unchained."

The supporting-actress picks are Amy Adams as a cult leader's devoted wife in "The Master"; Sally Field as Mary Todd Lincoln in "Lincoln"; Anne Hathaway as a mother fallen into prostitution in "Les Miserables"; Helen Hunt as a sexual surrogate in "The Sessions"; and Nicole Kidman as a trashy mistress of a Death Row inmate in "The Paperboy."

Field said the story of Lincoln connected with moviegoers on a personal level. "It really reflects about a family, a family who's in the heart of it, who faces such hardship. And families are facing terrible hardships all over the world, and then this one man who rises above it and keeps his eye on the prize and really the cost that that he paid."

Kidman was a dual nominee, also in the running as best actress in a TV movie or miniseries for "Hemingway & Gellhorn."

"As an actor you look for roles that are rich, complicated, and that stretch you and this year I was blessed to find two," Kidman said in a statement. "To have the chance to play them was a gift in itself and to then be acknowledged this way is icing on the cake."

"Quartet" star Smith also had a second nomination, for supporting actress in a TV series, miniseries or movie for "Downton Abbey."

Taylor Swift got a great birthday present Thursday. On the day she turned 23, she also got her first ever Globe nomination for co-writing the song "Safe & Sound" from "The Hunger Games."

"What an amazing and unexpected present!" she said. "I was a fan of the stories and the characters, and we all wanted the music to have an authenticity that matched the tone of the movie and the emotions expressed in the book."

Snubbed completely was the low-budget critical darling "Beasts of the Southern Wild," which won top honors at last January's Sundance Film Festival. Also shut out was the stripper hit "Magic Mike," which had good buzz for supporting player Matthew McConaughey, who also earned acclaim for roles in "Bernie" and "Killer Joe." Another film to not notch a single nomination was "The Hobbit," a prelude to the "The Lord of the Rings" films, which all got Globe nods.

With three nominations, "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen" was a surprise inclusion Thursday, since the film had virtually no awards buzz behind it.

There will be some friendly rivalry among the hosts at the Globe ceremony, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. Both were nominated for best actress in a TV comedy, Fey for "30 Rock" and Poehler for "Parks and Recreation."

Fey and Poehler follow Ricky Gervais, who was host the last three years and rubbed some Hollywood egos the wrong way with sharp wisecracks about A-list stars and the foreign press association itself.

The Sarah Palin drama "Game Change" leads TV contenders with five nominations: including best movie or miniseries and acting honors for Julianne Moore, Woody Harrelson, Ed Harris and Sarah Paulson.

Best TV comedy series nominees are "The Big Bang Theory," ''Episodes," ''Girls," ''Modern Family" and "Smash." TV drama picks are "Breaking Bad," ''Boardwalk Empire," ''Downton Abbey: Season 2," ''Homeland" and "The Newsroom."

Julia Louis-Dreyfus learned about her nomination for "Veep" while preparing to shoot an episode for the show's second season.

"We're actually at a military base in Maryland shooting. I was in the hair and makeup trailer on a military base, of all places, when I got the call," she said.

Hayden Panettiere was in Nashville, Tenn., when she got word that she'd been nominated as best supporting actress in a TV series for "Nashville."

"I had my phone on my chest sleeping because they told me to be around just in case, but I never expected to get this call," she said. "It took me a second and then it hit me and I just started welling up. I got pretty emotional."

Globe acting winners often go on to receive the same prizes at the Oscars. All four Oscar winners last season ? lead performers Meryl Streep of "The Iron Lady" and Jean Dujardin of "The Artist," and supporting players Octavia Spencer of "The Help" and Christopher Plummer of "Beginners" ? won Globes first.

The Globes have a spotty record predicting which films might go on to earn the best-picture prize at the Academy Awards, however.

Last year's Oscar best-picture winner, "The Artist," preceded that honor with a Globe win for best musical or comedy. But in the seven years before that, only one winner in the Globes' two best-picture categories ? 2008's "Slumdog Millionaire" ? followed up with an Oscar best-picture win.

Along with 14 film prizes, the Globes hand out awards in 11 television categories.

Jodie Foster, a two-time Oscar and Globe winner for "The Accused" and "The Silence of the Lambs," will receive the group's Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement.

With stars sharing drinks and dinner, the Globes have a reputation as one of Hollywood's loose and unpredictable awards gatherings. Winners occasionally have been off in the restroom when their names were announced, and there have been moments of onstage spontaneity such as Jack Nicholson mooning the crowd or Ving Rhames handing over his trophy to fellow nominee Jack Lemmon.

A traditional Sinterklaas debate: Is 'Black Pete' racist?

Every Dec. 5, Sinterklaas ? the Dutch and Belgian Santa Claus ? is celebrated. And the debate over Black Pete, his helper who is usually portrayed by whites in blackface and curly wigs, is rekindled.

By Peter Teffer,?Contributor / December 5, 2012

Persons dressed as 'Zwarte Piet' or 'Black Pete' attend a parade last month after St. Nicholas, or Sinterklaas, arrived by boat in Amsterdam. Foreigners visiting the Netherlands in winter are often surprised to see that the Dutch version of St. Nicholas's helpers resemble a racist caricature of a black person.

Tonight, as is the tradition on Dec. 5 in The Netherlands and Belgium, many children will receive gifts from Sinterklaas, or St. Nicholas. But there's another, more recent tradition that accompanies the holiday as well: the debate over Sinterklaas's traditional helper, Zwarte Piet, or "Black Pete."

For decades, the celebration of Sinterklaas has been surrounded by a discussion about whether Black Pete, who is traditionally portrayed by whites in blackface and wigs of curly black hair, is racist. This year is no different: One of Amsterdam's aldermen on Monday said that it is time to say farewell to the saint's black servant.

?When the Sinterklaas celebrations began, there was no Black Pete, and it's time to continue without Black Pete,? Andr?e van Es said on Monday in the Amsterdam newspaper Het Parool.

Sinterklaas is a tradition that has been traced back as far as the 15th century, and originally, Black Pete was a cruel man who would punish children who didn't behave. But it wasn't until Jan Schenkman's popular book "Saint Nicholas and His Servant" was published in 1850 that Sinterklaas ? and Black Pete ? truly became a national celebration in The Netherlands.?

Since the 1930s, the country has held an official parade where Sinterklaas is accompanied by multiple Black Petes. For a long time, these Petes also had curly hair and big earrings, and talked with an accent of Surinam ? the South American country that was a Dutch colony until 1975.

In the 1980s, several Surinamese action groups called for the end to Black Pete, and while they did not stop the tradition, they did prompt efforts to change it: for example, there were some attempts to make Petes of various colors in the 1990s.

The traditional explanation for Pete's blackness is derived from the fact that he climbs down the chimney to put gifts in the children's shoes, thereby covering himself in soot. Ms. Van Es suggests that this version should be more prominently reflected in the Black Pete's appearance: just some dark smudges on the face, instead of a completely painted black face.

Even some people closely associated with the celebration see room for change. Actor Bram van der Vlugt, who played Sinterklaas on national television from 1986 to 2010, recently noted in an interview that the helpers on TV have already lost their Surinam accents. ?I have also argued for just calling them Pieten instead of Zwarte Pieten. The tradition has been modified before.?

To a foreigner's eye, this all might seem quite absurd. Two American stand-up comedians, Greg Shapiro and Pep Rosenfeld, have been living in the Netherlands for around 20 years, and still are offended by the existence of Black Pete.

?I just can't get used to it," Mr. Shapiro told newspaper nrc.next in a recent interview. "It's an army of black slaves!?

The comedians have put their frustrations in a comedy show, "There?s no Such Thing As Sinterklaas," which includes their plea for a Black Pete reboot.

Rock legends take to New York stage for storm Sandy victims

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Bruce Springsteen, the Rolling Stones and Alicia Keys were among the musical stars headlining an all-star benefit concert for victims of Superstorm Sandy on Wednesday, in what producers promised was "the greatest line-up of legends ever assembled on a stage."

Organizers said the "12-12-12" concert at New York's Madison Square Garden was being distributed to nearly 2 billion people worldwide through television feeds, radio and online streaming.

"How do I begin again? My city's in ruins?" Springsteen sang. He was joined by fellow New Jersey native Jon Bon Jovi for "Born to Run," ushering in a night of musical duets.

Next up, Roger Waters performed alongside Eddie Vedder, and Paul McCartney was due to jam later in the evening with Dave Grohl.

"This has got to be the largest collection of old English musicians ever assembled in Madison Square Garden," Mick Jagger told the crowd. The Stones performed "You Got Me Rocking" and "Jumpin' Jack Flash."

To help with the fundraising, celebrities such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Kristen Stewart, Jake Gyllenhaal, Chelsea Clinton and Billy Crystal took part in a telethon during the concert, which was expected to last four to five hours.

Comedian Adam Sandler took the stage for a Sandy-themed spoof on Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," rhyming the title with "Sandy, Screw Ya!"

Backstage, actress Susan Sarandon recounted losing power in her New York home but said that was a small hardship compared with the real victims who lost their homes.

Steven Van Zandt, guitarist of the E Street Band, scolded "the oil companies" and "Wall Street guys" for not doing more to help.

"Even with the music business not what it used to be ... we are proud to be here," he said.

Before the concert, producer John Sykes said $32 million had already been raised from ticket sales and sponsorships. Organizers are hoping to raise tens of millions more.

It was being broadcast live on television, radio, movie theaters, on Facebook and iHeartRadio, and streamed on digital billboards in New York's Times Square, London and Paris.

EXPANDING FUNDRAISING'S REACH

More than 130 people were killed when Sandy pummeled the East Coast of the United States in October. Thousands more were left homeless as the storm tore through areas of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, causing billions of dollars in damage.

Throughout the show, celebrities shared memories of growing up in New York City or the Jersey Shore, and offered shout-outs to first responders.

"Watching my hometown get pummeled was devastating to watch," said actor-comedian Crystal, who grew up on Long Beach, Long Island. "It's a helpless feeling of what's in store for us maybe in the future."

Sykes was also involved with "The Concert for New York City" after the September 11, 2001, attacks, which raised more than $30 million for charity.

He said technological advances over the past decade had exponentially changed the reach of fundraising.

"We have both traditional and new media behind us in a way that we've never had before, and that is really going to be the 'x-factor' on how much money we can raise for the victims," he said.

Donations raised from the concert produced by Clear Channel Entertainment and the Weinstein Co, will go to the Robin Hood Relief Fund, which will provide money and materials to groups helping people hardest hit by the storm.

Unlocking the genetic mysteries behind stillbirth

Friday, December 7, 2012

Stillbirth is a tragedy that occurs in one of every 160 births in the United States. Compounding the sadness for many families, the standard medical test used to examine fetal chromosomes often can't pin down what caused their baby to die in utero. In most cases, the cause of the stillbirth is not immediately known. The traditional way to determine what happened is to examine the baby's chromosomes using a technique called karyotyping. This method leaves much to be desired because, in many cases, it fails to provide any result at all. Today, some 25 to 60 percent of stillbirths are still unexplained.

A new test for analyzing the chromosomes of stillborn babies, known as microarray analysis, has now proven 40 percent more effective in pinpointing potential genetic causes of death than the old karyotype testing procedure. Researchers at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, along with a team of other national leaders in maternal-fetal medicine, have published their findings in the Dec. 6 New England Journal of Medicine.

"Families have a much greater sense of closure if they understand what likely caused their baby to die," said Dr. George Saade, lead investigator of the UTMB arm of the study. "And for doctors to be able to see more genetic information about each stillborn baby can only be a good thing in terms of continuing the fight to reduce stillbirths worldwide."

Stillbirth, as defined separately from miscarriage, is when a baby dies in the womb prior to delivery at or after 20 weeks of gestation.

The study, part of the National Institutes of Health Stillbirth Collaborative Research Network's ongoing program, showed that microarray analysis genetic testing offers families strikingly more information than karyotyping about what potentially caused their baby to die before it was born. UTMB's Saade is the lead investigator for the study at UTMB, and chairman of the genetics committee for the Stillbirth Network.

The researchers compared the results of karyotypes from more than 500 stillbirths to results from microarray analysis, a method that detects small segments of missing parts of chromosomes (deletions) or additional sections of genetic material (duplications) that cannot be seen by karyotyping.

They analyzed samples from all stillbirths in a population-based study in five U.S. areas, covered by 59 hospitals over a period of two and a half years. Shortly after each stillbirth, parents gave research staff permission to collect blood from the umbilical cord and tissue from the fetus and the placenta.

The UTMB research team's goal was to reach the parents of 90 percent of all stillborn babies to residents of Galveston and Brazoria counties during the time period of the study. To achieve this, they formed partnerships with 11 hospitals in the region and developed a methodology whereby stillbirths were reported immediately to UTMB if the stillborn child's parents granted permission. Upon notification, UTMB sent staff members to the hospital to meet with the bereaved families.

If the families agreed to take part in the study, UTMB staff members then worked with the participating hospitals to transport the babies to Galveston for genetic testing and/or autopsy before arranging with funeral homes for the babies' final transport. About 100 stillbirths occurred in the Galveston/Brazoria county region during the two and a half years the study took place.

"It's really something, that families in such a tough situation, with all the shock and sadness they must be feeling upon the loss of their baby, would be willing to work with us to conduct this important stillbirth research," said Saade.

The hospitals included in the UTMB arm of the study were Angleton Danbury Medical Center, Brazosport Memorial Hospital, Clear Lake Regional Medical Center, Memorial Hermann Hospital, Mainland Medical Center, Methodist Hospital, Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital, Christus St. John Hospital, St. Joseph Medical Center, St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital, the Woman's Hospital of Texas and UTMB.

"We are so glad that the data from our region was included in this important national study," said Saade. "We are proud here at UTMB that our national reputation as a leader in maternal-fetal clinical research has enabled us to be part of this Network and study, and that we were able to work with such an outstanding group of participating hospitals."

Week 14 NFL Picks Against the Spread (Yanotchko)

Here are my Week 14 NFL picks against the spread:

Atlanta Falcons (-3.5) over Carolina Panthers

Last time these two teams met, the Falcons needed a blunder by Ron Rivera to win but did not cover. Other than this game, the Falcons are 4-1 against the number head-to-head with the Panthers.

The Falcons have an exceptional duo in the backfield with Michael Turner and Jacquizz Rodgers, and will exploit a Carolina rush defense that gives up 128 yards per game and 4.4 yards per carry.

[Editor's note: "Exceptional duo?"]

The Falcons are a well-coached machine, and I love Matt Ryan having a strong day along with Turner, who averaged 6.9 yards per carry last week.

Lay the 3.5 here for the clearly better team.

Chicago Bears (-3) over Minnesota Vikings

The best story all season has been the return of Adrian Peterson, but the Vikings were dealt a severe blow by putting Percy Harvin on IR on Wednesday.

The Bears have owned the Vikings against the spread as of late as they have gone a perfect 6-0. Peterson is one of the few matchup-proof backs out there, but a Bears 10th-ranked rushing defense that gives up just over 109 yards per game can slow him down.

I love Jay Cutler going against a passing defense that allows a completion percentage of 65.4 percent, and a Bears defense going against a one-dimensional offense. Lay the 3 for a Bears team that needs this game to keep pace in the NFC playoff race.

Kansas City Chiefs (+6.5) over Cleveland Browns

The Chiefs played exceptional in the face if tragedy last week, and this week will be a reunion of sorts in Cleveland. The Chiefs have several Browns alumni that will look to have a strong performance with Brady Quinn, Peyton Hillis, and Romeo Crennel.

I love a Chiefs rushing offense going against a Cleveland defense that gives up 115 yards and 4.1 yards per carry. I'm taking the 6.5 for the Chiefs as this game will be kept close with the duo of Jamaal Charles and Peyton Hillis.

All of our Week 14 picks will be posted on The Weekly Blitz page as they are made.

The Hallmarks of Legitimate Direct Selling/Network Marketing ...

Some clear criteria for legitimate direct selling/network marketing companies have long been recognized.

In determining whether a program is a legitimate direct selling/network marketing opportunity, the would-be participant should consider several important points:

  1. Goods or Service.?Legitimate companies offer high-quality goods or services and guarantee consumer satisfaction. Goods and services must have a ?real? demand in the marketplace, or an anticipated ?real? demand if the good or service is just being introduced.?Goods and services must have their own intrinsic value, such that distributors who purchase them would do so even if they were not involved in a network marketing business opportunity.
  2. Price.?Legitimate companies offer goods and services which are fairly and competitively priced. This eliminates companies which would attempt to benefit by ?price gouging? the members of their own sales force. It also ensures that distributors do not make purchases or encourage others to do so solely in order to receive financial reward. Distributors must be able to purchase the company product at wholesale or at a substantial discount from retail, based on volume of purchases.
  3. Investment Requirement. Legitimate companies require no up-front investment. Distributors who wish to participate in the business opportunity may be required to purchase sales kits or demonstration materials at or near company cost.
  4. Purchase and Inventory Requirement. Legitimate companies have neither minimum purchase requirements nor inventory requirements in order to become an independent distributor. Companies are restricted from requiring enrolling distributors to purchase any amount of goods or services.?Once in business, however, distributors may be required to maintain or achieve company-described minimum sales volume requirements in order to qualify to maintain or advance in sales force management status and retain or receive the associated privileges and benefits. These minimum requirements are usually based on personal purchases and sales, and the total group volume of sales.
  5. Product Use. Legitimate companies offer goods and services that people use. Purchasers may have need for, or simply desire, these goods and services. Ongoing consumption by purchasers based on satisfaction with the good or service is one of the keys to success of any business.
  6. Sales Commissions. Legitimate companies pay sales commissions solely for goods and services purchased. Commissions should not be paid on any sales materials, training fees, or any sort of non-product sales.
  7. Buy-back Policy. Legitimate companies agree to buy back inventory and sales kit materials ? for some reasonable period of time ? that are in resalable condition and are in the company?s current catalog. This policy is especially directed at serving distributors who cancel their participation and do not wish to use or resell their existing inventory at the time of their termination.?This policy also benefits distributors who purchase inventory in anticipation of making sales which then do not occur.
  8. Retail Sales. Legitimate companies place an emphasis on retail selling to non-participants. Companies promote retail selling in many ways, ranging from online, face-to-face, preferred customer programs, etc.?They do so to encourage a wider use of their product, and to have distributors benefit by building a customer base from which they receive retail profit.

From time-to-time, there has been some tension between regulators and the industry as to whether distributor personal use purchases should be accorded the same legal recognition as retail sales to nonparticipants. To help clarify this point, many state network marketing statutes have specifically provided that purchases for personal consumption in reasonable amounts by distributors and their families are equivalent to retail sales.?Even the FTC has recognized that distributor product purchases, in reasonable amounts, for personal use and at favorable pricing, is one reason why many individuals sign up with network marketing companies.

  1. Independent Distributor Activity. In legitimate companies, members of the sales force perform bona fide supervisory, distributive selling or soliciting functions?to move the product to the consumer. This translates into actively engaging in:
    • Retail selling,
    • Promoting the business opportunity, and/or
    • Managing ? including communicating with, training and supervising ? the members of their personal sales organization.
  2. Earnings Representations. Legitimate companies only make earnings representations that are based on actual, verifiable prior performance by members of their sales force. Company literature can refer only to the actual performance of distributors under the?current compensation plan.

As with companies, distributors are also responsible for making truthful earnings representations and representations of potential earnings which typically requires a disclosure of average earnings of company distributors.

  1. Training. Legitimate companies offer solid training to their distributors, especially in the areas of selling and presenting the business opportunity. Training is often in the form of one or more of the following:
    • Print materials.
    • Audio and audio visual materials.
    • One-on-one training by members of a distributor?s personal upline ? especially his or her sponsor.
    • Company-sponsored events such as workshops and conferences.

Maze wins super-combi, Vonn fails to finish

ST. MORITZ, Switzerland (AP) ? Tina Maze of Slovenia won her third race of the season by finishing first in both runs of a World Cup super-combined event Friday, while Lindsey Vonn failed to finish.

Vonn was fourth in the Super-G but lost control of a ski during an early turn in her slalom run and failed to finish.

Maze extended her lead in the overall standings by finishing in an aggregate time of 2 minutes, 1.76 seconds after the Super-G and slalom. She defeated Nicole Hosp of Austria by 0.88, while Kathrin Zettel of Austria was 1.08 behind in third.

Julia Mancuso of the United States was fifth after the Super-G, but slipped to 11th after posting the 23rd-fastest time in the slalom. World super-combined champion Anna Fenninger of Austria was seventh, 1.90 behind Maze.

The Slovenian finished runner-up to overall champion Vonn last season without winning a race. She now leads the American by 187 points despite Vonn's three straight wins last week at Lake Louise, Alberta.

"I am so strong because I trained hard for the season," said Maze, who has 14 World Cup victories. "I put in a lot of hard work. That makes me full of confidence."

Maze led by 0.01 after the Super-G ahead of Lara Gut of Switzerland, who dropped to fifth following the slalom.

"It's a nice course, but the visibility wasn't great," said Maze, who has won races in every discipline except for Super-G. "I am very satisfied, it feels good. I've had good Super-G runs in the past, but it never worked out in the end."

Maze tops the standings with 497 points. Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany, who missed out on the podium by 0.11 in fourth place, is second with 369. Next is Zettel with 320 and Vonn with 310.

Hosp, the 2007 overall champion, was seventh after the Super-G. She was fast enough in the slalom to earn her first podium finish since the race here last season.

"At ski racing, your mind plays an important role," said Hosp, who has not won a World Cup race since capturing a slalom in January 2008 at Maribor, Slovenia. "If you don't get the results it's hard to stay relaxed. I hope this race will help me for the rest of the winter."

This was the first of only two super-combined events this season. They count for the overall standings, but no crystal globe will be awarded to the discipline champion.

A regular Super-G will be held on the same course Saturday, followed by a giant slalom on Sunday.
